Preload: How To Speed Up Your Linux Application Loading Time

Posted: 28 Feb 2008 10:05 AM CST

preload is a free Linux. It runs in background and records statistics about usage of more frequently-used programs. These programs are loaded into a Linux memory. Thus results is faster application startup times. From the project home page:

preload is an adaptive readahead daemon. It monitors applications that users run, and by analyzing this data, predicts what applications users might run, and fetches those binaries and their dependencies into memory for faster startup times.

There is a nice tutorial published by Techthrob about installing and configuring Techthrob under Debian / Ubuntu Linux systems.

So if anyone knows what Fabric Edition is, I’d love to know. Usually I’m in the loop on these things but somehow I missed this one.

I hope it has something to do with some wicked-cool-fabric/ink-prints.

Erykah Badu - New Amerykuh: Part One -- 4th World War
Latest from the bluesy MC/vocalist features the single "Honey" and production by 9th Wonder. Free poster with purchase.

Beach House-Devotion CD/LP
While critics have compared the duo's 2006 debut to the work of early '90s dream popsters like Mazzy Star, Galaxie 500 and Slowdive, on Devotion listeners will also hear the band's longtime admiration for '60s Motown and country folk. Initial quantities include a free poster with purchase.

Cowboy Junkies - Trinity Revisited CD+DVD
Almost twenty years on, Cowboy Junkies return to the scene of their breakthrough album to recreate the magic -- this time with Ryan Adams, Natalie Merchant and Vic Chesnutt along to share in the vocal duties. Specially priced two-disc set contains a CD and a DVD of the performance as recorded and filmed at the Church Of The Holy Trinity in Toronto in November 2006. The DVD also includes a documentary.

Earth - Bee Made Honey In The Lion's Skull

Marianne Faithfull - No Regrets
Country/pop material recorded in 1976 prior to her breakthrough with 1978's harrowing Broken English.

China Forbes-'78 (Pink Martini)

Ghostland Observatory-Robotique Majestique
Only Texas could claim something as improbable as this -- sweaty, raw-boned, and direct from the future; committed to electronics, stuck on big beats, yet unmistakably powered by rock & roll. These guys share a love for Vince Young and Daft Punk, Los Tigres Del Norte and The Animals. They mostly prefer to let their music speak for itself -- and it's not subtle.

Glorytellers - Glorytellers CD/LP
Much-anticipated debut from Geoff Farina's (Karate/Secret Stars) new band.

Goldfrapp-Seventh Tree CD/CD+DVD
Fourth album from the genre-busting pop pioneers was recorded at their studio deep in the English countryside. The album shimmers and shines with the warmth of a hazy summer, an electric whirlpool of sound over which Alison Goldfrapp's glistening voice soars. The limited deluxe edition adds a lyric book, poster, art cards, a DVD with an exclusive documentary and the video for the single "A&E" -- all housed in a nice cloth-bound box.

Missy Higgins - On A Clear Night
Sophomore album introduces a newfound positive, uplifting attitude to her passionate singer-songwriter piano rock. On A Clear Night shines a bright light on Australia's most popular young artist. Also produced by Mitchell Froom. "Heartfelt and insanely melodic." -- Paste Magazine

Richard Julian - Sunday Morning In Saturday's Shoes
Recorded in L.A. under the guidance of legendary producer Mitchell Froom (Los Lobos/Crowded House/Elvis Costello/Suzanne Vega/Bonnie Raitt/Ron Sexsmith), the production is a bare-knuckled, stripped down affair which features live in-studio performances of Richard with his New York rhythm section. Froom's familiar keyboard wizardry makes cameo appearances throughout.

Tift Merritt - Another Country
After some time off in Paris with a piano, Tift returns with her most personal album yet. Features guests Charlie Sexton and Doug Pettibone.

The Old Crow Medicine Show - Eutaw
2001 studio recording previously only available through the band's website or at live gigs.

Porcupine Tree - We Lost The Skyline
On October 4, 2007, Porcupine Tree arrived for an in-store performance and signing session at Park Avenue CDs in Orlando, Florida with 200 fans also in attendance. Although it was originally planned that the full band would perform, lack of space dictated that only the two guitarists/singers -- Steven Wilson and John Wesley -- could play. This special, one-off performance includes many songs rarely (if ever) done by the full band. Eight tracks, 33+ minutes.

Punch Brothers - Punch
Youthful band comprising the most prodigious and sought-after musicians from the cutting edge of bluegrass and folk music. The project is masterminded by former Nickel Creek star Chris Thile.

Tuesday March 11, 2008-Cryptacize-7pm

http://www.asthmatickitty.com/musicians.php?artistID=17
Cryptacize began across the street from the C&H Sugar Factory in Crockett, CA, where Nedelle and Chris (Deerhoof) lived in a tilted apartment. Constant dizziness and the smell of burning sugar became a permanent part of their psyches, and is consequently their biggest influence. One morning while brushing their teeth, toothpaste running sideways out of their mouths, Nedelle pronounced the word 'Cryptacize' and the house appeared to incline in the opposite direction! Soon after this strange incident, they discovered something even stranger on youtube - a drummer named Michael Carreira. Having only seen his video, which was a closeup of his hands, they sought him out and convinced him to join their uncanny crusade. Catch them here before they play with Why? later that night in Denton.

Wednesday March 12, 2008-Human Bell-7pm
http://www.myspace.com/humanbell
http://www.thrilljockey.com
Nathan Bell (Arbouretum) and Dave Heumann (Lungfish) first started playing music togther sometime after the start of '99 and definitely before the end of '01. It was soon apparent that they'd hit upon a winning combination - they found an unusual synergy of writing styles that has enabled them, at times, to compose a whole album's worth of songs together in the course of a leisurely afternoon. The style of music that they found themselves playing defies categorization, but has been described by listeners as containing aspects of minimalism, pre-war american blues/folk, and middle eastern and african musics. They are stopping off their way to hook up with the Boredoms. This will be their only show in the area.

The LK, from Malmo, Sweden, will embark on their first full American tour to promote their upcoming US release - VS the Snow. The LK compose music using color and shapes as artistic guidelines (Lindefelt is a color-timbre synesthete), incorporating motion graphics into the live show, frequently experimenting with the dynamics of both abstract visual work and short films in the context of their music. This will be there only show in Dallas.

Tuesday March 18, 2008-Silje Nes-5pm
http://www.myspace.com/siljenes
http://fat-cat.co.uk/fatcat/artistInfo.php?artist=Silje+Nes
Silje is a songwriter who likes to experiment and find new ways to use sounds and instruments in her music. She has studied classical piano, played timpani in an Orchestra, played drums in a marching band and played in a traditional indie pop band, - but when she started recording her songs, she worked with her laptop and a lot of instruments she had no previous experience of playing. She plays around with instruments and sounds without conventions, and combined with her good songwriting, the result is stunningly beautiful. She will be opening for The Dodos the next night at Lola's in Ft. Worth.

Worth.

Shell Script: Create Linux Bootable USB Sticks

Posted: 27 Feb 2008 04:44 AM CST

This may come handy, from the project page:

Mk-boot-usb is a perl script to create multiple-bootable usb sticks (usb keys / usb flash drives). It wipes out an entire usb stick, partitions it, creates file systems on it, installs grub, and installs a minimal linux on it. Mk-boot-usb is meant to speed up and lower the barrier of entry for creating bootable usb sticks. The usb stick will immediately become bootable (using the minimal linux), and more useful distributions can then be installed into other partitions manually simply by (1) copying any Live CD into each partition (2) modifying grub’s configuration file.

Divine clothing get busy tee shirt

Get Busy is a 100% cotton, screen printed tee shirt with a very positive message “get busy living or get busy dying”. I would be very happy if more people wear T-shirt with positive attitude like this and cheer up the situation.

Although only worn by girl model, this tee is actually available in unisex size, from Youth Large size to Extra large. I don’t know if pink color could appeal to male buyers though. Grab this T-shirt from Divine Clothing for $17

If you’re on Facebook (oh yes, you are) and think you don’t have application to have fun with, Karl Long’s Tcritic has compiled few cool Facebook Apps that are T-shirt related. Although these 14 applications are taking T-shirt (or clothing, in general) as the main theme, they actually offer different kind of fun.

Those which are on list such as T-shirt E-store, My Label, Wear Me Naked T-shirt, and some few more including T-Shirt Appreciation Society created by Karl himself. After all, these are just yet another excuse to spend some more time on Facebook.

Microsoft Announces Open Source Interoperability Initiative

Posted: 21 Feb 2008 12:16 PM CST

Microsoft has announced Open Source Interoperability Initiative. From the announcement press release :

The Open Source Interoperability Initiative exists to foster more open engagement between Microsoft and open source communities. It will encompass a broad range of facilities, events, and resources supporting interoperability, including labs, plug fests, technical content and opportunities for ongoing cooperative development. Microsoft plans to publish APIs and protocols that are used by Windows Vista (including the .NET Framework), Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008, Office 2007, Exchange Server 2007 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 — as well as their future versions. Also Microsoft will not require developers to license or pay royalties for this information. Specifically, Microsoft is implementing four new interoperability principles and corresponding actions across its high-volume business products: (1) ensuring open connections; (2) promoting data portability; (3) enhancing support for industry standards; and (4) fostering more open engagement with customers and the industry, including open source communities.

Microsoft also agreed not to sue developers of open-source software and releasing tons of API. More information available at:

Get Detailed Information About Particular IP address Connections Using netstat Command

Posted: 21 Feb 2008 12:14 AM CST

netstat command and shell pipe feature can be used to dig out more information about particular IP address connection. You can find out total established connections, closing connection, SYN and FIN bits and much more. You can also display summary statistics for each protocol using netstat.

This is useful to find out if your server is under attack or not. You can also list abusive IP address using this method.
# netstat -nat | awk '{print $6}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -n
Output:

      1 CLOSE_WAIT 1 established) 1 Foreign 3 FIN_WAIT1 3 LAST_ACK 13 ESTABLISHED 17 LISTEN 154 FIN_WAIT2 327 TIME_WAIT

Dig out more information about a specific ip address:
# netstat -nat |grep {IP-address} | awk '{print $6}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -n

       2 LAST_ACK 2 LISTEN 4 FIN_WAIT1 14 ESTABLISHED 91 TIME_WAIT 130 FIN_WAIT2

Busy server can give out more information:
# netstat -nat |grep 202.54.1.10 | awk '{print $6}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -n
Output:

   15 CLOSE_WAIT 37 LAST_ACK 64 FIN_WAIT_1 65 FIN_WAIT_2 1251 TIME_WAIT 3597 SYN_SENT 5124 ESTABLISHED

Get List Of All Unique IP Address

To print list of all unique IP address connected to server, enter:
# netstat -nat | awk '{ print $5}' | cut -d: -f1 | sed -e '/^$/d' | uniq
To print total of all unique IP address, enter:
# netstat -nat | awk '{ print $5}' | cut -d: -f1 | sed -e '/^$/d' | uniq | wc -l
Output:

449

Find Out If Box is Under DoS Attack or Not

If you think your Linux box is under attack, print out a list of open connections on your box and sorts them by according to IP address, enter:
# netstat -atun | awk '{print $5}' | cut -d: -f1 | sed -e '/^$/d' |sort | uniq -c | sort -n
Output:

    1 10.0.77.52 2 10.1.11.3 4 12.109.42.21 6 12.191.136.3 ..... ... .... 13 202.155.209.202 18 208.67.222.222 28 0.0.0.0 233 127.0.0.1

You can simply block all abusive IPs using iptables or just null route them.

Get Live View of TCP Connections

You can use tcptrack command to display the status of TCP connections that it sees on a given network interface. tcptrack monitors their state and displays information such as state, source/destination addresses and bandwidth usage in a sorted, updated list very much like the top command.

Display Summary Statistics for Each Protocol

Simply use netstat -s:
# netstat -s | less
# netstat -t -s | less
# netstat -u -s | less
# netstat -w -s | less
# netstat -s

Output:

Narrated by Val Kilmer, American Meth is a cross-country journey that focuses on several facets of the methamphetamine epidemic. From the oil fields of Wyoming and New Mexico to the homeless in Portland and the teens of Montana, filmmaker Justin Hunt spins a blue collar tale of tragedy and triumph.

American Music Club-The Golden Age
Latest from Mark Eitzel and his new Club members is a fresh effort to experiment and extend the range of their abilities. From the mariachi horns to the breezy Beach Boys harmonies to the unfolding layers of feedback -- it is full of varied, joyous and generous pop music.

Atlas Sound-Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel (Deerhunter)
Atlas Sound is the solo moniker of Deerhunter frontman/provocateur Bradford Cox. A collage of garage rock and ambient electronics resulting in fourteen songs of melancholy and mania. File under: Deerhunter. "A largely ambient meditation on romantic obsession full of densely layered electronics and guitars that sound as if they were beamed in from some haunted parallel universe." -- The Fader

Balmorhea-Rivers Arms
Mirroring the vast Texas skies, the soulful collection of songs on Rivers Arms is imbued with a visceral weight and endless space.

Bell X1-Flock
One of Ireland's biggest groups, Bell X1 was formed when the band Juniper split after the exit of Damien Rice for a soon-to-be-successful career. The album contains hooks galore, amidst a tapestry of moody, introspective nuances. Limited first pressing includes bonus tracks, concert footage, a music video and more.

Belong-Colorloss Record
New Orleans group channels John Cale via My Bloody Valentine. Each record cover handmade by the artist. Limited to 300 copies worldwide.

The Big Sleep-Sleep Forever
NYC-based psychedelic post-rock trio move beyond mere imitation of their heroes to stake out a wall-blistering identity of their own. "The Big Sleep is as indebted to its influences (Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Black Sabbath) as any band is, but on Sleep Forever the members take bold enough steps to shake the influences clear. -- Prefix

Blood On The Wall-Liferz LP

Bon Iver-For Emma, Forever Ago CD/LP
Pronounced "bohn eevair," French for "good winter" and spelled wrong deliberately. Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. This solitary time fed a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. All his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss and guilt that had been stockpiled over the past six years was suddenly purged into song. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Brotzmann/Uuskyla Duo-Born Broke 2CD

Burn To Shine 5-Seattle DVD
Death Cab For Cutie's Benjamin Gibbard brought together fourteen of his favorite bands to create a portrait of one of the world's most thriving music scenes. Performers include Eddie Vedder, Dave Bazan, The Long Winters, Kinski, Tiny Vipers, Minus The Bear -- just to name a handful. Although the shows are usually filmed in a house shortly before it's destroyed, the house at the center of this edition was saved and recycled. The ending sequence is uplifting, energizing, and weird.

Company-Old Baby
The latest record from Company, a songwriting collective and rock band rooted in folk, punk, country, and psychedelic traditions. Weird, defiant and lovely.

Cryptacize-Dig That Treasure CD/LP
Every song on Dig That Treasure is a miniature journey, a dreamy habitat built out of the minimum of material. Sudden rhythmic gestures and frequent key changes will leave you feeling pleasantly disorientated. It is humbly inspired by the larger-than-life emotions of West Side Story, the joyfully percussive guitar gospel of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Wizard Of Oz's bittersweet escapism, the other-world sentimentality of Sun Ra's Spaceship Lullaby, and Henry Cowell's ethereal piano string strumming.

Danava-Unonou CD/LP
"Unonou may be only seven tracks long but they are pretty much all epic length -- ranging from metal riffs and stoner rock bass lines on opening track 'Unonou' and 'A High Or A Low' to '80s-style epic synth solos on 'The Emerald Snow Of Sleep' and classic psychedelic '70s rock on the almost sludgy paced 'Spinning Temple Shifting.' The result is a densely layered album with one foot in old school rock and the other foot floating in space." -- roomthirteen.com

Ray Davies-Working Man's Cafe CD/DLX CD/LP
Previously import-only, the latest from the leader of The Kinks is now available stateside with three bonus tracks. Deluxe edition adds a fourth bonus track as well as a DVD with the short film Americana: A Work In Progress. "As good as anything Ray has written in decades." -- Mojo

The Dead Science-The Tomlab Alphabet Singles Series V 7"
Latest volume in Tomlab's collectable seven-inch series includes a fragmentary and impressionistic song about the American film actor Robert Blake.

Mike Doughty-Golden Delicous
Former Soul Coughing leader releases loose-limbed, freewheeling set recorded with his touring band that brings all the aspects of his singular muse together in one smart, humorous and eloquent package. Doughty sticks close to his "dude theory" -- the idea of making a relaxed record that sounds like a bunch of dudes playing music for the pure joy of playing. Initial quantities include Busking, a bonus five-song CDEP.

Envy-Compiled Fragments 1997-2003 CD/LP
An hour-long collection of singles, rarities and unreleased tracks. Originally released in 2003 on the group's own Sonzai Records in Japan, this album has never been available in North America, and has never been released on vinyl -- until now.

The Epochs - The Epochs CD (Rebel Group)_
Pronounced "ee-poks," their eponymous sophomore album is a sprawling record from bombastic electronics to seething orchestration to playful rhythms. It never stops in one place long enough to be pigeonholed. Recommended for fans of Spank Rock, TV On The Radio, Klaxons and The Avalanches.

Roky Erickson & the Explosives

Marianne Faithfull-No Regrets

Flipper-Live DVD
From the archives of San Francisco's famous Target Video comes this monster release featuring the classic early-'80s lineup of Flipper. Capturing extreme and scorching performances from 1980 and 1981, this DVD helps form a picture of the band that slowed down punk rock and made the kids suffer in the "louder faster" days of hardcore.

Flowers Forever-Flowers Forever (Tilly & The Wall)
Flowers Forever is inspired by late-'80s/early-'90s punk, The B-52s, David Hockney, Lou Reed, dumb conversations, bike rides and other normal things.

Four Letter Lie - What A Terrible Thing To Say
Don't let these wholesome looking boys from Minnesota fool you... Four Letter Lie may pack an abundance of pop hooks in their tunes, but they also pack a massive hardcore punch that will floor anyone that crosses their path.

Genghis Tron - Board Up The House CD
The enigmatic trio known as Genghis Tron weave an ocean-sized orchestra from just a few instruments and machines. Giant riffs and frenetic beats make perfect sense next to haunting vocal melodies and moments of subtle beauty. The sound of the future colliding with the present with enough force to tattoo itself forever upon the mind.

Grand Archives-The Grand Archives CD/LP
Debut album from a new quintet led by singer/guitarist Mat Brooke (formerly of Carissa's Wierd and Band Of Horses). The vinyl includes a limited 7" single plus an MP3 coupon.

Growing-Lateral CD/LP
Lateral finds Growing upgrading their otherworldly, dense compositions with newfound rhythmic motifs added to their dreamy sound sculptures. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Headlights-Some Racing, Some Stopping CD/LP
Based around acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards, drums, and other instrumentation, Headlights' sophomore record combines the pop sensibilities of previous efforts with a more restrained approach to songcraft that results in a clearer, concise musical vision.

Health-Perfect Skin Curses! Remix 7"
The first installment in a new limited edition, seven-inch remix series on Suicide Squeeze. Limited to 2,000 copies, pressed on solid blue vinyl. "HEALTH mixes the bombastic pound of Boredoms, the skewed structures of Deerhoof, the tribal thump of Liars, and even the synth squirts of Black Dice and Excepter." - Pitchfork

The Heavenly States - Delayer
"This Oakland, California trio delivers equal parts patchouli-soaked violin and Superchunk-worthy melodies." -- Rolling Stone

Juno Soundtrack LP
On limited edition colored vinyl.

Kingdom Of Sorrow - Kingdom Of Sorrow
Punishing new band featuring Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed) and Kirk Windstein (Down/Crowbar). "Kingdom Of Sorrow hits your ear hole like a slug through the tar infected lung of a toxic swampbeast ready to attack." -- Jose Mangin (Sirius Satellite Radio)

Kula Shaker-Strangefolk
Reunion album released domestically.

Kurt Cobain - About A Son DVD
Cobain was deeply suspicious of journalists, but he trusted Rolling Stone's Michael Azerrad enough to give him unprecedented access during the writing of his book Come As You Are: The Story Of Nirvana. Consisting entirely of Cobain's never-before-heard musings and recollections recorded by Azerrad and laid on top of newly shot footage of the places that he lived, this DVD offers an intimate portrait of the rocker's troubled formative years and meteoric rise to stardom. Free poster with purchase.

Jim Lauderdale-Honey Songs
The second in a string of rapid-fire releases from Nashville songwriting guru Jim Lauderdale is a gathering of mythical music proportions. Lauderdale pulled together big name friends and session royalty for this album, including legendary Elvis Presley guitarist James Burton along with Springsteen's E Street Band bassist, Gary Tallent. Flying Burrito Brother Al Perkins lays down pedal and lap steel alongside the piano of superstar sideman Glen D. Hardin (Merle Haggard, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Dean Martin). Holding down the backbeat is drummer Ron Tutt -- who has to be the only man with the distinction of playing with both Elvises -- Presley and Costello. The big names don't end with the instruments -- backing vocalists include Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless, Buddy Miller and Kelly Hogan.

Gary Louris-Vagabonds
After decades of perfecting the alt-country sound with the seminal Jayhawks, Gary Louris releases this sterling solo debut. Full of swooning heartbreak, death obsession, vaguely psychedelic imagery, and yearning, nostalgic vocals. Produced by Black Crowe Chris Robinson. Initial copies come with a bonus six-track acoustic CD -- only available at independent record stores.

Nick Lowe-Jesus Of Cool CD/LP
Definitive edition of this 1978 masterpiece includes all of the tracks from the original UK Jesus Of Cool and it's US companion Pure Pop For Now People as well as seven bonus cuts. "As guitar pop music comes back into fashion among indie rockers, more and more albums are sounding like awkward and self-aware approximations of the very thing that Jesus Of Cool does so effortlessly. In a sense, Lowe's unpretentious inclusiveness may have stopped Jesus Of Cool just short of becoming a huge record in any one world; the album is far too unabashedly admiring of pop music to be seen as a punk rock classic, but too gritty and ramshackle to be considered a seminal new wave pop record. Thankfully, Jesus Of Cool is a rarer thing still: a timeless and b#llshit-free masterpiece. Rating: 9.3." -- Pitchfork

Megafaun-Bury The Square CD
"Instead of dressing up polished alt-country songs with veils of hum, Megafaun pickles rickety back porch folk reconstructions in a brine of chaotic field recordings and organic, free-form atmospheres. It's an album so ingeniously balanced that it stands a chance of satisfying both folk and experimental music fans." -- The Independent Weekly.

Mojo - March 2008 (#172)
Smiths cover feature plus an article on the 50 greatest UK indie singles of all time. Bonus CD, Beloved, is a collection of classic British indie rock (The Teardrop Explodes, Orange Juice, The House Of Love, etc.)

Monade-Monstre Cosmic LP/CD (Stereolab)
Led by French chanteuse Laetitia Sadier, best known as Stereolab's singer and lyricist, Monade have released their third album. Laetitia Sadier explains how the record came into being: "The original idea behind the writing of the tracks was a river -- to have one long track that would take its course and you would never hear the same part twice, just as one can never swim in the same river because of the elusive flow of the water."

Allison Moorer-Mockingbird
Classic songs from legendary female songwriters -- from Joni Mitchell to Patti Smith to Gillian Welch -- interpreted by Grammy and Academy Award nominee Allison Moorer.

Morcheeba - Dive Deep CD
Features renowned guest vocalists Judie Tzuke, Tomas Dybdahl, Cool Calm Pete and more. "Morcheeba have found the tie that binds '60s spy music, blues-infused hip-hop and fragile balladry." -- Rolling Stone

Bob Mould - District Line LP+MP3
Quality 180-gram vinyl pressing with coupon for MP3 download of the entire album.

Mountain Goats-Heretic Pride LP/CD
Heretic Pride is a suite of songs about mythical creatures, imaginary cults, slasher films and pulp fiction novelists. Here, chief songwriter and lauded lyricist John Darnielle has come up with some of the most anthemic, impassioned and downright catchy songs of his career.

Neptune-Gong Lake CD/LP
Neptune is equal parts musicians, sculptors, scientists, blacksmiths, electricians, and industrial machinists -- all relentlessly inventive. They construct their own instruments, forging guitars and drums out of circular saw blades, gas tanks, oil drums, bike parts, VCR casings and miscellany from the trash. The effect is a bizarre, post-apocalyptic mélange of steel, iron, wire, rust, rivet, knob and cable.

No Kids-Come Into My House CD/LP
Come Into My House achieves an unexpected cohesiveness despite the wide range of musical styles -- golden era Hollywood musicals, Jam & Lewis-inspired production techniques, the icy displacement of contemporary R&B, and the breadth of Arthur Russell's compositions.

Pacific UV-Longplay 2
The droning ambience that once prevailed in their work has countered itself with something more sinister, resulting in an album that balances itself perfectly between noise and melody. "A masterpiece... soothing whispers, quietly droning guitars, and electronic blips." -- Rolling Stone

Paint It Black-New Lexicon
It's gritty, thunderous, and ugly, just the way hardcore punk should be. New Lexicon marks the band's first recording with new drummer Jared Shavelson (Hope Conspiracy, None More Black) and boasts guest vocals from Jeff Pezatti of Naked Raygun.

Panther-14kt God
This is the two-headed alter ego of Charlie Salas-Humara (The Planet The) on vocals, cello, guitar and keys, and Joe Kelley (31 Knots) on drums. Think Ian Curtis' convulsive intensity coupled with James Brown's spastic swagger.

Porcupine Tree-Nil Recurring
Recorded as an offshoot to the Fear Of A Blank Planet sessions, this half-hour mini-album displays the influence of King Crimson -- to the point of recruiting Robert Fripp for lead guitar duties!

The Raveonettes-Lust Lust Lust CD/LP
Highly recommended. The Danish duo returns with an album that perfectly distills their '60s noir-pop songcraft and fuzz-guitar clamor into a melodic, sensuous voyage through the many facets of desire. Sune and Sharin create a compelling combination of sexy pop songs and rock & roll urgency that makes this an excellent companion to Magnetic Fields' Distortion album. Previously available on import, this release includes two North America-only bonus tracks. Vinyl includes a bonus 7" 45 and full digital album download.

R.E.M. - Live 3xLP+DVD Box Set
Sprawling live recording includes a bonus DVD of the entire show, nearly two hours of footage recorded in Dublin, Ireland.

Sian Alice Group-59.59 CD/LP
Features contributions from Douglas Hart (The Jesus And Mary Chain), John Coxon (Spiritualized) and Brian DeGraw (Gang Gang Dance). "Beautiful, lush, dreamy and ethereal, but there's a dark, rainy spookiness at the album's core that sets it apart from so many experimental groups out there." -- Vice

Donita Sparks-Transmiticate
Solo debut from Donita Sparks -- former front person and main songwriter of the seminal rock band L7. Recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Donita with Ethan Allen (Luscious Jackson, Pleasure Club, Gram Rabbit), the album is filled with dance-rock and dark-pop gems that find Donita moving into territories that might surprise her fans.

Screamers (System Of A Down) DVD
Documentary feature examining why genocides keep occurring -- from the Armenian genocide in 1915, to The Holocaust, Bosnia, Rwanda and now Darfur -- through the eyes and music of the rock band System Of A Down (whose members are all grandchildren of genocide survivors). The film targets the problem of genocide denial, with specific reference to the Turkish government's current campaign to stop its citizens from discussing the genocide, as well as hypocritical US foreign policy.

Tad - Busted Circuits And Ringing Amps DVD
This DVD spans the entire career of Tad, the heaviest band ever. Features archival live footage, music videos, lost footage, as well as new footage and interviews with the band members and Krist Novoselic (Nirvana), Mark Arm (Mudhoney), Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), Chad Channing (Nirvana), and many others.

Taken By Trees-Sweet Child 'O Mine 7"

These New Puritans - Navigate, Navigate 12"
"Navigate, Navigate" is a twelve-minute jam the band was commissioned to record for Christian Dior's Autumn 2007 Paris fashion collection, and is backed with a club-ready remix by DFA's Tim Goldsworthy.

Throw Me The Statue-Moonbeams CD/LP
Seattle band's debut is a wondrous concoction of fuzzed-out synths, brass ensembles and epic vocal melodies. At the album's core is a sharp sense of melody, a cutting lyrical honesty, and a bludgeoning beat that brings to mind the whimsy of Magnetic Fields, the lyrical expanse of The Microphones, and the lo-fi bliss of Eric's Trip.

Tiger Lou-The Loyal
This Swedish band has been lighting up venues throughout their homeland and Germany for over three years. Recommended for fans of New Order, Travis, Now It's Overhead and Snow Patrol.

J. Tillman - Minor Works CD (Undertow)_
Existential folk-dread from Seattle.

Vampire Weekend-Vampire Weekend LP

The Weakerthans - Reunion Tour LP+MP3
High quality 180-gram vinyl -- includes MP3 download.

Las Rayas Blancas (The White Stripes) - Conquista 7"
Versión en español de la canción "Conquest" con una versión acústica de mariachi. Queremos ser un poco más emocionados, pero Las Rayas Blancas vendieron sus almas negras a Mejor Compra. Adiós, traidores.

Thom Yorke -And It Rained All Night (Burial)/Skip Divided (Modeselektor)/Analyse (Various) Remixes 12"

Google Supporting Photoshop On Linux

Posted: 20 Feb 2008 01:32 PM CST

Google is financially supporting Photoshop On Linux. They have hired Codeweavers to run Photoshop better on Linux. From the google blog:

Perhaps the biggest news is that we hired Codeweavers to make Photoshop CS and CS2 work better under Wine. Photoshop is one of those applications that Desktop linux users are constantly clamoring for, and we’re happy to say they work pretty well now. Perhaps not coincidentally, apps like Flash 8 are now starting to work in Wine, too. We look forward to further improvements in this area.

According to Novell, Photoshop is the most requested non-Linux application that Linux users would like to run. Gimp is good but it is without many professional features such as cmyk and others. This is fantastic news for hardcore photoshop users. Good to see google is helping out wine developers :)

Chroot in OpenSSH / SFTP Feature Added To OpenSSH

Posted: 20 Feb 2008 01:11 PM CST

For regular user accounts, a properly configured chroot jail is a rock solid security system. I’ve already written about chrooting sftp session using rssh. According to OpenBSD journal OpenSSH devs Damien Miller and Markus Friedl have recently added a chroot security feature to openssh itself:

Unfortunately, setting up a chroot(2) environment is complicated, fragile and annoying to maintain. The most frequent reason our users have given when asking for chroot support in sshd is so they can set up file servers that limit semi-trusted users to be able to access certain files only. Because of this, we have made this particular case very easy to configure.

This commit adds a chroot(2) facility to sshd, controlled by a new sshd_config(5) option “ChrootDirectory”. This can be used to “jail” users into a limited view of the filesystem, such as their home directory, rather than letting them see the full filesystem.

Install and Run Debian Linux from an Encrypted USB Drive

Posted: 20 Feb 2008 02:07 AM CST

Another interesting article with security in mind. From the article:

You’re probably familiar with the live CD concept — a fully functional operating system on a CD that can be run on any computer that boots from its optical drive, without affecting the one(s) already installed. In a similar vein, you can set up Linux to run from a USB hard drive drive on any computer that can boot from USB. The live system offers automatic detection and configuration of the display adapter and screen, storage devices, and other peripherals. A bootable USB drive can run a mainstream Linux distribution such as Debian GNU/Linux, and can be secured, personalised, upgraded, and otherwise modified to suit your needs.

Posted: 20 Feb 2008 02:00 AM CST

This is a must read if you or your organization associated with open source software project. If you are interested in a basic understanding of the legal issues that impact FOSS development and distribution, this primer is for you. The guide, written for developers, has sections on copyrights, trademarks, patents, organizational structure and other legal issues:

First, we provide creative, productive hackers insight on how to interact with the legal systemâ€"insofar as it affects the projects they work onâ€"with a minimum of cost, fuss and risk. Second, we present a starting point for lawyers and risk managers for thinking about the particular, at times counter-intuitive, logic of software freedom. While these are the primary audiences we intend to reach, we hope others will benefit from this Primer as well, and we have purposefully given it a non-lawyer style of communication (for example, by intentionally omitting dense citation of judicial or other legal authority that is the hallmark of lawyers writing for lawyers).

While FOSS development can raise many legal issues, a few topics predominate in our work; these are the issues most integral to FOSS projects. This Primer provides a baseline of knowledge about those areas of the law, intending to support productive conversations between clients and lawyers about specific legal needs. We aim to improve the conversation between lawyer and client, but not to make it unnecessary, because law, like most things in life, very rarely has clear cut answers. Solutions for legal problems must be crafted in light of the particulars of each client’s situation. What is best for one client in one situation, may very well not be best for another client in the same situation, or even the same client in the same situation at a later date or in a different place. Law cannot yield attainable certainty because it is dynamic, inconsistent, and incapable of mastery by pure rote memorization

The Legal Issues Primer for Open Source and Free Software Projects is available in following formats:

  1. Online HTML version
  2. PDF version [318K]
  3. Postscript version [1.2M]

So, I don’t really LOVE the Hurley branding on this design, but the print on this tee is so great that it doesn’t really matter.

This tee is for sale at Swell for $22 bucks and the print wraps around to the back.

Microsoft DreamSpark: Giving Away Developer Software

Posted: 19 Feb 2008 06:04 AM CST

It appears that Bill has finally figured out success of open source software. Microsoft Corp. is giving students free access to its most sophisticated tools for writing software and making media-rich Web sites, a move that intensifies its competition with Adobe Systems Inc. and could challenge open source software’s popularity. Students can download complete working set of compilers (developer tools) including Visual Studio Professional Edition, Expression Studio and XNA Game Studio 2.0. The company will also give away SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and Windows Server Standard Edition.

The programs are available now to more than 35 million college students in the U.S., Belgium, China, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K. DreamSpark will open to high school students around the world starting in the fall and to college students in other countries in the next year.

Giving away Visual Studio, meanwhile, will help ensure a steady stream of new desktop and desktop-Web hybrid applications Microsoft hopes will keep consumers hooked on Windows PCs, even as more programs migrate to the Web.

=> Students can see if they’re eligible to download the software at: MSDN website.

Alright, I’m not really sure what this design is about. The description says something about a llama benefit and staking your claim on 2008. I have no idea what any of that means and I don’t really care. This crest is bad ass and I’d gladly wear it anywhere.

Why Linux Desktop Does Not Spread - the Curse of Being Free

Posted: 17 Feb 2008 10:34 PM CST

This is a philosophical post on why Linux hasn’t grown to challenge Windows as the most popular operating system. From the blog post:

Linux isn’t very popular on the desktop. It’s a far third behind OS X, which is a very far second behind Windows. Most people cite pre-installed operating systems as the reason. But as a student of psychology, I see something most people don’t. There’s one big factor in why Linux isn’t popular on the desktop. Linux is free. I know this sounds like complete dog’s bollocks, but hear me out before judging my sanity.

My personal experience suggests that people don’t use GNU/Linux on desktop because :

  1. Steep learning curve
  2. Software incompatibility or doesn’t run the software they want
  3. Installing and obtaining drivers may be issue for average joe
  4. Finally, human psyche is complex subject. There are people who buy expensive apple hardware and install Linux on it. You just can’t predicate human behavior.

I use Linux on desktop because I work with a Linux / UNIX server all day and I find that using it on the desktop as well actually makes my life easier. You know one-size-fits-all approach may be unrealistic in a real life. I see my workplace desktops fully loaded with mix of Linux, OS X and dominated by Windows XP pro.

Linux Configure WPA2 for RT61 based Wireless Card

Posted: 17 Feb 2008 10:09 PM CST

I’ve already written about configuring and using DLink wireless card with the help of RT61 driver. However, few readers like to know more about Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA and WPA2) secure wireless configurations.

Step # 1: Configure Router / AP with WPA2 Security Mode

First you need to configure WPA2 security mode on the access point. All devices on your network must use the same security mode in order to communicate. Open router configuration by visiting default IP https://192.168.1.1/ and setup

  • Security Mode: WPA2 Personal
  • WPA2 Algorithm: You may choose from AES or TKIP+AES. Choose TKIP+AES if you have both WPA and WPA2 devices on your network.
  • WPA2 Pre-Shared Key: Choose a unique key to authenticate with other devices on your network. The Pre-Shared Key must be between 8 and 63 characters in length. You can generate unique key by visiting this webpage. You can also use standard UNIX / Linux utilities to generates true random passwords (key) by using the /dev/random feature of Linux.
  • Group Key Renewal: This settings determines how often your group key changes.

Configure WPA2-PSK for Your Router or Access Point
(Fig. 01: Configure WPA2 for your router / access point)

Step # 2: Configure RT61 Wireless Card

Open /etc/network/interfaces file and make changes as follows:
$ sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces
Output:

auto ra0 iface ra0 inet dhcp pre-up iwconfig ra0 mode managed pre-up ifconfig ra0 up pre-up iwconfig ra0 essid nixcraft pre-up iwpriv ra0 set AuthMode=WPA2PSK pre-up iwpriv ra0 set WPAPSK='|zdUkK(!X)_'G!}@1|@OS/6RA#'+}eq8b&V@x1%OZyyDVV:Xwp8UmwLFNS^7=A+' pre-up iwpriv ra0 set EncrypType=AES

Save and close the file. Make sure you replace device name (ra0), essid and WPAPSK with actual configuration parameters. Restart the networking:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Other simple security suggestion

  1. Change the default admin password on the access point / router.
  2. If possible turn off administration feature on the access point for wireless interface
  3. Set up an access control list by Mac address of all devices you want to associate with the access point.

Please note that above instructions are only tested using RT61 driver under Ubuntu Linux. However, instructions should work with any other Linux distos and drivers with minor or minimum changes.

There’s story behind this tee:

There was this girl in 7th grade who had obviously gone to see Les Miserables over summer vacation. She had all this shit like T-shirts and notebooks and a beret it was pretty gnarly and I never had any idea what it was. Then I found out and still didn’t really give a shit.

I don’t know if the story touch you, but I can imagine of this little; and facial expression of the girl just say it all. Les Cosby, Les Miserables get this tee for $38 from Krudmart

You know what? I love when girls wear cute tee shirts. Thankfully we have Paul Frank to provide a ton of them. This is one of my favorites. Since mostly guys read this blog I figured I’d suggest this as a present for their girlfriends (or wife, or the hottie that lives next door).

Or, if you are a girl - add this to your shopping list, I guarantee you’ll look good. Well, at least I think you will. Also, I’d love if you leave a comment so that I know you’re out there.

By the way, this is from Karmaloop. So put in rep code: MH9047 and get 20% off. Cha ching.

FEBRUARY 12th NEW RELEASES
***********************************************
Baby Walrus-Baby Walrus CD/LP
The third release on Saddle Creek's understudy label Slumber Party Records, Baby Walrus' diverse self-titled album is the work of Art In Manila/Flowers Forever collaborator Chris Senseney on guitar, keyboards and vocals, with Spaceage Polymers members John P. Voris on percussion and Dylan Strimple on guitar and keyboards.

British Sea Power-Do You Like Rock Music? CD/LP
The third album by Brighton-based rockers British Sea Power is a thrilling mixture of classic Pixies-esque guitar rock and the joyous bombast of Arcade Fire. "It's our version of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde," says guitarist Martin Noble. "It's about cherry wood and Kevlar -- about the good and the bad. There are good reasons for anxiety at the moment -- but if we're in danger let's address the danger with optimism, loud distorted chords and the knowledge that we're at least trying. That's rock music, isn't it?" The vinyl includes a copy of the album on CD -- yay!!

Carolina Funk: First In Funk 1968-1977
The 4th installment in the now classic series that began with Texas Funk, Midwest Funk and Florida Funk. Another regional home run in the funk sweepstakes from Egon, Jazzman Gerald and crew. Contains rare gems by the likes of Gamith, Carleen & The Groovers, Primitive and James Reese & The
Progressions and more as sampled by Cut Chemist and J. Rocc.

City And Colour (Alexisonfire)-Bring Me Your Love
"The second album from Dallas Green's solo project City And Colour shows an artist settling nicely into his new gig as an acoustic singer/songwriter. It's both warmer and more intimate than its predecessor, Sometimes. Green's voice is still ethereal, but it's also stronger and more self-assured. Those who are unfamiliar with his work in the raucous post-hardcore group Alexisonfire could be forgiven for thinking that he's a veteran of the acoustic circuit." -- allmusic.com

Droppin Science: Greatest Samples From The Blue Note Lab CD/LP
From A Tribe Called Quest to Gang Starr to Dr. Dre to the Beastie Boys, Blue Note has been the source of a deep groove, a soulful vamp, or hittin' beat that we associate with some of the greatest hip-hop songs. Blue Note is Droppin' Science, bringing it back to the lab of the jazz, funk, and soul chemists who gave the label some of the most influential and groundbreaking music of their time.

Flo & Eddie-The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie
On CD for the first time, 2 long-lost albums from 1972 and 1974 by Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (The Turtles, Frank Zappa). Digitally remastered for the 21st Century.

Goldfrapp-A&E
The first EP from Goldfrapp's forthcoming album Seventh Tree (to be released in both regular and deluxe editions on February 26) includes remixes by Maps, Gui Boratto and Hercules And Love Affair.

Guru-Best Of Jassmatazz
Features eighteen essential tracks, including: "Trust Me," Watch What You Say," "Keep Your Worries" and "Lift Your Fist."

Idiot Pilot-Wolves CD/LP
On Wolves, Idiot Pilot bolsters their electro-rock sound with catchy melodies and sterling production, courtesy of nu-metal/hardcore veteran Ross Robinson and Mark Hoppus (Blink 182/+44).

Michael Jackson-Thriller CD/DLX CD
Epic/Legacy's release of a 25th-anniversary edition of Thriller — tricked out with five remixes, an unreleased track, and a DVD — is a good time to place this creation in its proper art-historical context. From the video, the songs and the illusionary "Moonwalk", this is the
Michael Jackson of legend, and rightly so.

Freedy Johnston-My Favorite Waste Of Time
Freedy's covers album, previously only available via his website and on tour. Ten mostly happy songs by Marshall Crenshaw, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Matthew Sweet and other greats. The sessions were recorded in Nashville with legendary bassist Bob Babbitt, drummer Ed Greene, and a whole posse of guest musicians.

Metric-Live At Metropolis DVD
New concert DVD captures Emily Haines and the entire Metric jamming out at the Fall 2006 Montreal stop on their Live It Out Tour. Also includes the videos for three Live It Out singles: "Monster Hospital," "Poster Of A Girl," and "Empty."

Controversy: A Tribute To Prince
As Prince celebrates 30 years as a mainstream artist, a selection of musicians from a wide range of genres have taken some of his classic songs and interpreted them in their own way. Controversy: A Tribute To Prince includes new takes on a host of tracks from the pop legend's back catalog. Thirteen artists have chipped in for this effort, including Soulwax, D'Angelo, Peaches, Stina Nordenstam and Hefner.

The Puppini Sisters-The Rise & Fall Of Ruby Woo
The girls are back with their trademark fusion of 1940s harmonies and modern day pop.

Simple Plan-Simple Plan
Two albums. Seven million records sold worldwide. A string of Top 40 hits like I'd Do Anything, Addicted, Perfect and Welcome to My Life. Here is album #3.

Stones Throw: In Living The True Gods DVD
Stones Throw's first DVD, Stones Throw 101 served as a primer course for those unfamiliar with the label's video releases, and included one of indie hip-hop's greatest visual moments, the animated Madvillain "All Caps" video. Directors of Stones Throw 101 videos have gone on to great heights, working for the likes of Nas, Young Buck, Ludacris and alongside visionaries like Michel Gondry.
For the label's follow up, the West Coast mavericks have assembled a more advanced curriculum, In Living The True Gods - a line borrowed from Madvillain's "Accordion," seen for the first time on this collection. From the surrealist Quasimoto "Bullyshit" animated video to the late J Dilla's last appearance on film in MED's "Push" to the neo-noir animated nightmare of Madvillain's "Monkey Suite," this anthology demonstrates Stones Throw's widening, and never retiring, creative base. A series of bonus features range from an exclusive J Dilla interview from 2003 to a mini-documentary Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf, shot in session on VHS in 1992.

How To Patch Running Linux Kernel

Posted: 12 Feb 2008 02:28 AM CST

Yesterday, I wrote about a serious Linux kernel bug and fix. However, few readers like to know about patching running Linux kernel. Patching production kernel is a risky business. Following procedure will help you to fix the problem.

Step # 1: Make sure your product is affected

First find out if your product is affected by reported exploit. For example, vmsplice() but only affects RHEL 5.x but RHEL 4.x,3.x, and 2.1.x are not affected at all. You can always obtain this information by visiting vendors bug reporting system called bugzilla. Also make sure bug affects your architectures. For example, a bug may only affect 64 bit or 32 bit platform.

Step # 2: Apply patch

You better apply and test patch in a test environment. Please note that some vendors such as Redhat and Suse modifies or backports kernel. So it is good idea to apply patch to their kernel source code tree. Otherwise you can always grab and apply patch to latest kernel version.

Step # 3: How do I apply kernel patch?

WARNING! These instructions require having the skills of a sysadmin. Personally, I avoid recompiling any kernel unless absolutely necessary. Most our production boxes (over 1400+) are powered by mix of RHEL 4 and 5. Wrong kernel option can disable hardware or may not boot system at all. If you don’t understand the internal kernel dependencies don’t try this on a production box.

Change directory to your kernel source code:
# cd linux-2.6.xx.yy
Download and save patch file as fix.vmsplice.exploit.patch:
# cat fix.vmsplice.exploit.patch
Output:

--- a/fs/splice.c +++ b/fs/splice.c @@ -1234,7 +1234,7 @@ static int get_iovec_page_array(const struct iovec __user *iov,                 if (unlikely(!len))                         break;                 error = -EFAULT; -               if (unlikely(!base)) +               if (!access_ok(VERIFY_READ, base, len))                         break;                  /*

Now apply patch using patch command, enter:
# patch < fix.vmsplice.exploit.patch -p1
Now recompile and install Linux kernel.

I hope this quick and dirty guide will save someones time. On a related note Erek has unofficial patched RPMs for CentOS / RHEL distros.

OpenOffice Text Files That Are Larger Than 65,536 Rows Cannot Open / Imported

Posted: 12 Feb 2008 01:39 AM CST

This sucks, Open office 2.3 spreadsheet cannot open or import text files that are larger than 65,536 rows. Basically, I need 100k rows. However, it is possible to recompile OO to extend rows limitation. From the OO wiki hack page:

Well, it depends on what your goal is. For personal use you may set MAXROWCOUNT_DEFINE in sc/inc/address.hxx to a different value, multiple of 128, and recompile the application respectively the libsc680*.so and shove it under your existing installation. However, doing so implies that you don’t save to any binary file format like Excel or whatsoever, otherwise you risk loss of data. You’ll also encounter drawing layer misfits in higher row numbers, may experience performance problems, and there may be other quirks lurking. Note that it generally works for data and formulas, but otherwise is completely untested.

For the number of columns the same applies to the MAXCOLCOUNT_DEFINE in sc/inc/address.hxx, just that the value must be a multiple of 16 instead.

My text file is truncated at 65,536 and I was dumped with the following error message:
Text files that are larger than 65,536 rows cannot be imported

I’m going to recompile my OO. Another good option is using MySQL. However, I’m not in mood to write a php / python scripts to just create graphs and other stuff.

Linus Torvalds on Linux Desktop Operating System

Posted: 08 Feb 2008 01:23 PM CST

Don Reisinger wonders - if Linus Torvalds even speaking for Linux anymore:

Even though Linus Torvalds has always been known as a deity-like figure in the world of Linux, lately he has been quite outspoken about where he thinks his operating system is going and what its competitors are doing wrong.

Wired blog has published Linus Torvalds thoughts on why users aren’t flocking to Linux:

As always there’s a laundry list of things Torvalds doesn’t care about — Open Solaris and Sun, for instance — but his thoughts on the future of the Linux desktop are interesting, including this bit: “I have never, ever cared about really anything but the Linux desktop.”

You can read Linus Torvalds thoughts on the Linux desktop and its broader adoption here.

Open Source Guide for Small and Medium Enterprise / Business

Posted: 08 Feb 2008 01:05 PM CST

This is an excellent set of guides encouraging FLOSS for small and medium size enterprises / business. From the guide:

Open source software is the most significant all-encompassing and long-term trend that the software industry has seen since the early 1980s”. This is one of the conclusions of a recent IDC report [IDC 06], which shows how much the perception of FLOSS (free/libre/open source software) has changed in the recent years. Right now, the majority of developers in the world are using open source software [Forr 07], and FLOSS platforms are used in one way or the other by a large share of companies.

Despite this situation, there is still a significant barrier in the adoption process for small and medium companies, both in terms of using FLOSS internally and in creating products and services centered on FLOSS products. The purpose of this report is to provide a simple and in-depth view of the fundamental aspects of FLOSS, how to adopt it within a small/medium company, and how to build a sustainable business based on it.

UNIX / Linux Professional Salary Potential Ranges

Posted: 08 Feb 2008 12:34 PM CST

From my mail bag:

I’m seriously considering getting trained myself with a UNIX / Linux education. Can you give me some general idea about salaries for computer professionals with diploma or degree education?

Salaries depends upon many factors such as:
=> Your country / location
=> Your credentials
=> Your level of experience
=> Your education level
=> Employer size
=> Industry
=> Job title etc

The best way to find information is just contact to your local recurring agency. Another old good option is LUG members. If you are located in U.S see Bureau of Labor Statistics website. After a quick search, I found following data (again valid for USA):

a] Tech support staff - US $50-55k p.a.
b] UNIX Sys / Net Admin - US $75-90k p.a.
c] UNIX Systems Manager - US $120k+ p.a.

There is no such data exists for India and salaries vary depending on diffrent factors. Please note that:

More Experience + Additional skillset == More money

FreeBSD List / Display Open Ports With sockstat Command

Posted: 08 Feb 2008 11:50 AM CST

You can use traditional netstat / lsof command to lists open Internet or UNIX domain sockets on FreeBSD. FreeBSD comes with a simple and easy to use command called sockstat.
The -4 option only displays IPv4 sockets.

The -6 option only displays IPv6 sockets.

The -c option only displays connected sockets.

The -l option only displays listening sockets (open port).

For example, display IPv4 related open ports, enter:
# sockstat -4 -l
Output:

USER COMMAND PID FD PROTO LOCAL ADDRESS FOREIGN ADDRESS root sendmail 653 3 tcp4 127.0.0.1:25 *:* root sshd 647 3 tcp4 10.20.110.2:22 *:* root ntpd 616 4 udp4 *:123 *:*

Here the equivalent of netstat:
$ netstat -nat | grep LISTEN
For information read sockstat command man page:
$ man sockstat

Hugh Jackman Likes Boombox Tee, Maybe You Should too

Posted: 08 Feb 2008 09:47 AM CST

hugh-jackman-clean-shaven.jpg

By right, I should have been posted this few weeks back. It’s when Dexie at She Knows Best asked The Daily Tee to find this vintage tee shirt worn by Hugh Jackman. Vintage boombox tee shirts? Well, that should not been difficult… just by typing out “boombox T-shirt”, I already have at least 74,200 search result!

boombox1 tee shirtboomboxbabyt1 tee shhirt

But unfortunately, I could not found any tee that really has identical look. One good tee I found was Dynalesk’s shirts (click images above for product detail), err… the boombox face different angle with the one worn by Hugh though, and they used different type brand of Boombox too.

Although I couldn’t found boombox tee that Dexie want, hey, at least I’ve discovered some others cool Boombox tees. Oddica is one tee shop with great deal of obsession toward “boombox”; it even has four tees in this topic which are: Exploded Boombox, Boombox Spirits (pictures below), Boombox Geek and These Waves are Mine

Oddica Boombox SpiritOddica exploded boombox

Anyway, whatever tee shirt you wear you may will never been able to get people's attention just like Mr. Jackman. Unless you really insist… maybe you need to offend people a little bit with this tee…. (here’s the women version)

FEBRUARY 5th NEW RELEASES
***********************************************
Air Traffic-Fractured Life
Air Traffic's Fractured Life is a debut album of brilliant, occasionally brutal, mood music. The group's name originated from its rehearsals in an abandoned industrial unit near the runway at Bournemouth International Airport, where air traffic control signals could be picked up on the band's equipment. While recording the album, an EP of four of the tracks was released in October 2006 in the U.K. In addition, Air Traffic also had its first television appearance in November 2006 when the band appeared on Later with Jools Holland which paved the way for the release of the album Fractured Life in July 2007. Many of the songs on Fractured Life, like Never Even Told Me Her Name, describe the feelings of breathless anticipation the band registered once the four 21-year olds sensed their career taking off. Another of the songs charting the band's ascent was Shooting Star, a sublime melody poised on the edge of a maelstrom of rock and roll theatrics. From the sexual euphoria of Charlotte to the bleak introspection of Empty Space, to the heart-pumping brand new US track Come On.

Black Lips/Subsonics-split 7"
Four songs from two of Atlanta's best, recorded live at the infamous Clermont Lounge. Black Lips perform "Bad Kids" and "Lean," while Subsonics kick in with "Hello Beauty" and "Pistol."

Brazil Classics 7: What's Happening In Pernambuco, New Sounds Of The Brazillian Northeast
If you only buy one compilation of electronic roots music from Brasil this year, make sure it's this one. In the 1980s, while urban centers of the Brazilian south like Sao Paulo and Rio were inundated with homegrown rock movements, Pernambuco didn't have much of a music scene at all. Vowing to jump-start the local scene Fred Zero Four got together with Chico Science and a collective of local bands and visual artists to found the Mangue Beat movement -- the most significant musical and aesthetic movement in Brazil since Tropicalia. The music is an explosion of punk-rock-funk-rap-electronic sound, infused with the maracatu, coco, ciranda and embolada rhythmic traditions of the rural northeast. Thirteen amazing artists creating a new genre-defying party.

Basia Bulat-To My Darling
Debut album from the Canadian singer/songwriter -- heavily influenced by folk, jazz and acoustic music, her unique vocal style and varied range has led to comparisons ranging from Feist to Natalie Merchant to Elyse Weinberg.

Buria Chamber Trio-Wvrm (Oren Ambarchi/Sunno) 10" picture disc
Watch out for the heavy evil.

Can-Tago Mago
Can-Ege Bamyasi
Reissued at a cheaper price.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis-The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
Soundtrack for director Andrew Dominik's savage tale of the true West (starring Brad Pitt) perfectly captures the charismatic and unpredictable nature of the film's central protagonist. Like the film, Cave and Ellis' music cuts through the mythic figure of Jesse James to reveal the complex, contradictory man beneath. Daring and passionately delivered, this beautiful soundtrack retains its captivating power even without the benefit of Dominik's images.Previously import-only, now available at a domestic price.

Jason Collett-Here's To Being Here CD/LP (Broken Social Scene)
Here's To Being Here captures the essence of Jason's live performances and features the energy and musicianship of his touring band, Paso Mino. Features guest performances by fellow Broken Social Scene member and Apostle Of Hustle frontman Andrew Whiteman, and Liam O'Neil (The Stills) to name a few. File under: Broken Social Scene. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

The Crystal Method-Drive
Latest from the electronica duo was previously available only in limited release as Drive: Nike + Original Run via the Sport Music section of iTunes. Drive is an original soundtrack composed to guide athletes through a 45-minute (insert favorite activity here), from warm-up through cool down.

Betty Davis-Betty Davis LP+7"
Fresh pressing of the 1973 debut from the funk diva. Limited to 1500 copies, packaged in a gatefold sleeve with bonus 7".

Dead Meadow-Old Growth LP/CD
A remarkably clear, powerful and confident recording that should elevate the trio into the pantheon of the great guitar bands of our time. Darlings of both the stoner rock and the modern psychedelia worlds, Dead Meadow transcend both and have created a sound all their own.

Devastations-Yes, U CD/LP
Fifth album of kaleidoscopic proportions from this Australian act (who have been championed by Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) -- recorded in Berlin and mixed in New York.

The District! DVD
This outrageous and visually-stunning animated satire plays like an unhinged ghetto update of Romeo & Juliet smash-filtered through a politically charged -- and politically incorrect -- kaleidoscope of clashing world views and social unrest, complete with musical numbers and a wicked soundtrack of Hungarian hip-hop. "Like an Eastern European South Park." -- Seattle International Film Festival, 2006

Bill Dixon with Exploding Star Orchestra-Bill Dixon with Exploding Star Orchestra
This album finds the free jazz legend performing with Rob Mazurek's (Chicago Underground, Isotope 217) Exploding Star Orchestra and was recorded in Chicago at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio. Other players include John Herndon and Jeff Parker (Tortoise), Nicole Mitchell (Frequency) and Matthew Lux (Isotope 217, Iron And Wine).

Drive By Truckers-Gangstabilly LP

Drive By Truckers-Decoration Day LP
Drive By Truckers-The Dirty South LP
Drive By Truckers-A Blessing And A Curse LP
First time issues on vinyl.

Electric Wizard–We Live
Electric Wizard–Let Us Prey
Rock.

Gilberto Gil-Duetos
Brazilian pop legend pairs up with the likes of Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso and many more.

Gomez-How We Operate 2xLP
Limited 180-gram vinyl pressing previously only available via the band's website.

Grand Ole Party-Humanimals
Lead singer Kristin Gundred rips into each track on Grand Ole Party's debut album as if heavily influenced by Motown girl groups and sexy cabaret dancers. With funky fresh beats and sultry lyrics, the band has created a unique, explosive album. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Hot Chip-Made In The Dark CD/CD+DVD
Third full-length release and the follow up to their critically acclaimed album The Warning. This new installment shows Hot Chip at their best -- wonderfully quirky, clever, soulful and poppy. Their sound is evolving towards wilder, heavier electronics, though still coupled with their signature pop aesthetic. Made In The Dark also shows that the band is equally at home creating songs of intimacy and melancholy as they are with dancefloor fillers. With this release, the hipsters (you know who you are) who found and love Hot Chip will still be lured in by their originality and inventiveness, whereas the undeniable infectiousness and catchiness of their music should bring them a wider audience.

Iron Maiden-Live After Death DVD
All metalheads and rivetheads rejoice.

Isis-Holy Tears
EP from the atmospheric metal masters includes the studio version, a live version, the video and a remix from The Melvins!

Jack Johnson-Sleep Through The Static CD/LP
"My friends and I have just finished recording a new album called Sleep Through The Static. At this point in my life I weigh about 190 lbs and my ear hairs are getting longer. I also have a couple of kids. My wife popped them out, but I helped. Some of the songs on this album are about making babies. Some of the songs are about raising them. Some of the songs are about the world that these children will grow up in -- a world of war and love, and hate, and time and space. Some of the songs are about saying goodbye to people I love and will miss. We recorded the songs onto analog tape machines powered by the sun in Hawaii and Los Angeles. I hope you enjoy this album. Mahalo for listening." -- Jack Johnson
Available for audition in one of our listening stations. Vinyl comes in a gatefold sleeve with a download code for the entire album. Initial quantities include a special picture sleeve 7" featuring the album track "If I Had Eyes" b/w "Let It Be Sung" from the soundtrack A Brokedown Melody.

Kamera-Resurrection
Jason Miller rock from Sweden.

Killing Joke-Fire Dances
Killing Joke-Night Time
Killing Joke-Brighter Than A Thousand Suns
Killing Joke-Outside The Gate
All reissued.

Lenny Kravitz-It's Time For A Love Revolution CD/DLX CD/LP
From the garage stompfest "A Love Revolution" to the James Brown-via-Aerosmith funk workout "Will You Marry Me?" Kravitz's irony-free pastiches often satisfy like the best work of his rock and
soul forebears; and considering his tastes, that's a remarkably high standard

Kronos Quartet-Terry Riley: The Cusp Of Magic
The debut recording of Terry Riley's six-movement piece, The Cusp Of Magic. Commissioned by Kronos on the occasion of their longtime friend and collaborator Riley's 70th birthday, the piece features the Quartet joined by Wu Man on pipa (a Chinese plucked string instrument, similar to a lute) and vocals, with all musicians also playing a variety of percussion instruments, toys, and noisemakers.

Lightspeed Champion-Falling Off The Lavendar Bridge
Lightspeed Champion is the alter ego of Dev Hynes, musical polymath and former member of cult noise pop band Test Icicles (who disbanded in 2006). On this record Hynes is backed by an informal band, including drummer Clark Baechle (The Faint), along with moonlighting members of Cursive and Tilly And The Wall.

Los Campesinos!-The International Tweexcore Underground CDEP/7"
"The International Tweexcore Underground is utterly terrifying. An acrobatic, vanilla-scented waltz bustling with speaker-blotting harmonies and a gliding string-skewered melody that palpitates hearts through mouths, Los Campesinos! third single will have you weeping with fear. But it's not entirely down to the Welsh septet's new release being quite possibly the most thrilling spectrum of xylophone chiming pop-perfection you'll hear this year. No, it's because The International Tweexcore's kaleidoscopic splendour has been concocted by a cherubic bunch of sickly-sweet kids barely old enough to order a pint, nevermind write a track steeped in pure symphonic brilliance. See? Completely terrifying. Rating: 9/10." -- Spins And Needles

Bob Mould-District Line
District Line combines the fire of his earliest work in Hüsker Dü, the accessibility of his alternative rock, genre-defining trio Sugar, and the introspection found in his solo releases. He describes it as "stories of my simple life in a complicated town" (that being his adopted city of Washington, DC). Working with Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty, Mould has returned to the live-band sound that is as youthful, energized and immediate as anything he has ever recorded. Initial copies include a bonus CDEP featuring three songs Bob Mould performed at the 2007 CIMS convention in Los Angeles.

Nada Surf-Lucky
Along with their previous two albums, 2003's Let Go and 2005's The Weight Is A Gift, Lucky is the final piece of a rather astounding trilogy that, taken as a whole, manages to express more about the frustrations and joys of modern life than most artists can expect to assemble over a career. Guest appearances include Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), Sean Nelson (Harvey Danger), Ed Harcourt (English singer-pianist), Phil Wandscher (Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter) and John Roderick (The Long Winters). This deluxe, limited edition version includes a bonus disc featuring two acoustic versions plus two non-album B-sides. Once sold-out, only the single CD version will be available.

Nico-The End LP
The End was Nico's fourth release, as well as her fifth collaboration with JOHN CALE and third with him as producer. The album was her darkest, most caustic work yet. It carried the same organic,
harmonium-based gothic music heard on The Marble Index and Desertshore, but went one step further with the addition of BRIAN ENO's synthesizers and electronics. The mix of Nico's gloomy,
hypnotic melodies and Eno's synthetic droning, as heard on "Innocent and Vain." produced an atmosphere of brooding apocalyptic destruction.

Ocrilim-Annwn
Ocrilim is the nom-de-plume of guitarist Mick Barr, who has performed mightily with Orthrelm and with The Flying Luttenbachers, among others. "This isn't metal proper; it's metallic art-rock - beautiful and more emotionally engaging." -- Alternative Press

Daxaar is a series of improv sessions recorded with longtime collaborator and producer Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) on electronics. The ensemble also consists of keyboards, guitar, bass, trumpet and percussion. File under: Four Tet. "Nuanced afro-jams of hypnotic power." -- Q

Dax Riggs-If This Is Hell Then I'm Lucky
Reissue of demos for Deadboy and the Elephantmen.

Josh Ritter-In The Dark CD+DVD
Josh Ritter-In Good Company DVD
Recorded over two nights in Vicar Street, Dublin, Ireland earlier in 2006, 'In The Dark' is a double CD / DVD set that captured Idaho born singer Josh Ritter at a pivotal moment in his career. With four albums behind him (3 of them gold in Ireland), Josh broke out from cult artist in Ireland to a singer songwriter with a worldwide career. The live album features favorites from across his catalog. 'Kathleen,' 'Girl In The War,' 'Harrisburg,' 'Good Man,' 'Me & Jiggs,' 'Thin Blue Flame,' and many others. The DVD which accompanies the live album is so much more than your standard concert DVD. It's a movie which takes the listener on a journey with Josh. Again it features plenty of performances over two nights at Vicar Street as well as plenty of intimate interview footage with Josh and plenty of color and context around Dublin.

Rock That Uke DVD
Rock That Uke is a quirkily philosophical cinematic love poem that examines the near mystical allure of the ukulele and the recent wave of alternative and experimental musicians who have taken up the four-stringed underdog of the music world to incorporate it not just into their raucous and irreverent original compositions, but into a counter-cultural/post-punk ethos.

Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group-Calibration (Is Pushing Luck And Key Too Far)
Latest solo effort from The Mars Volta guitarist focuses more on electronics and experimentalism and features an all-star cast of contributors including Cedric Bixler-Zavala (The Mars Volta), John Frusciante and Money Mark. Available for audition in one of our listening stations. File under: The Mars Volta.

Roxy Music-The Thrill Of It All: A Visual History (1972-1982) DVD
38-track collection collects live footage, TV performances and promotional music videos. Amazing stuff, much of it with original member Brian Eno.

Say Hi-Wishes And The Glitch CD/LP
The fifth record from the now Seattle-based Say Hi, formerly Say Hi To Your Mom. Available for audition in one of our listening stations. "Recalls the futuristic feeling of Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie -- that intellectual battle with impending modernity and the feeling of alienation from real humanity explored by Grandaddy and Radiohead. Eno-esque with eerie, fantastical motifs." -- Spin

School Of Language-Sea From Shore CD/LP (Field Music)
School Of Language is the new project from David Brewis of Field Music. The album veers between the intricate and unplayable and the solitary and unadorned, their cohesion stemming from an embrace of all that is most obtuse and personal.

Sons & Daughters-This Gift
This Scottish four-piece have fashioned a distinct sound inspired by the melancholy storytelling of Lee Hazlewood, the lyricism of Leonard Cohen, and the raw power of country, blues, and folk filtered through their punk adolescence. This Gift develops this sound into a whirlwind of tarnished sixties glamour, referencing celebrity culture, cult films and literary classics.

State Radio-Year Of The Crow
Long-delayed sophomore release from the Massachusetts reggae-rockers led by guitarist/vocalist Chad Urmston (formerly of Dispatch). The album continues the trio's signature blend of rock, punk and reggae, as well as its socially and politically conscious message. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Kelley Stoltz-Circular Sounds
The fourth LP from San Francisco's Stoltz is a stereophonic advance on the lo-fi psych-fuzz of 2004's Antique Glow and the mid-fi piano-rock of 2006's Below The Branches. Both made #24 in Mojo's "Best Albums" list for their respective years. Circular Sounds is very much a pop record in the classic '60s mold. Radio-ready yet retaining the organic warmth that gave his earlier work its character.

The Ten DVD
Much of the group responsible for MTV's The State -- including director/actor David Wain and performers Ken Marino, Kerri Kinney-Silver and Joe Lo Truglio -- reunite for this outrageous, irreverent and raunchy sketch comedy, which skewers the Ten Commandments. "Hilariously funny!" -- The Onion

Things That Hang From Trees DVD
Deborah Kara Unger is a single mother and lingerie model in a '60s Bible Belt southern town -- a one-woman scandal. She struggles to keep her life afloat amongst judging small town eyes that both resent and love her beauty. Her son, eight-year old Tommy is a frail boy, full of dreams and fantasies caught in an town of misfits and bullies, with only his dysfunctional mother to protect him.

Paul Weller-Wild Wood DELUXE
Deluxe reissue of the album considered by many critics to be Weller's post-Jam masterpiece. The package includes the original album as well as 28 bonus tracks -- including B-sides, demos, outtakes, BBC sessions, covers (including Crosby, Stills And Nash's "Ohio" and Small Faces' "I'm Only Dreaming") as well as a remix of the title track by Portishead. The 32-page booklet features extensive liner notes and current interviews.

PHP Programming Tutorial: Merge and Filter RSS / Atom Feed With XQuery

Posted: 07 Feb 2008 03:48 AM CST

I’ve already written about merging two feeds using MagpieRSS and FeedCreator php classes. However, I wasn’t aware of XQuery query language that is designed to query collections of XML data. It seems similar to SQL. You can use XQuery to speed your merging and filtering of RSS / atom information (feed) easily. In this tutorial:

You will learn the basics of XQuery processing of RSS and Atom feeds to turn a single feed into an HTML document. Then you produced a more complete solution for outputting the information in a format that suits your needs, including sorting, merging multiple feeds and even handling different feed and source information types. XQuery makes it much easier to merge and filter information from XML documents when you embed the filtering instructions right into the document that you use to generate the output format. You can use that functionality to aggregate information from RSS and Atom feeds into the format you need. In this article, look at the structure of the RSS and Atom formats and how XQuery can simplify the display of that information.
