When Pikachu is Angry, it Says Fukachu!

Posted: 30 May 2008 06:53 PM CDT

FUKACHU T-SHIRT pokemon pikachu
The new T-shirt by SplitReason is based on parody of popular Japanese’ anime character, Pikachu. I’m sure you don’t need introduction to this yellow little monster, one of fictional species from Pokémon. But I really get amused by Fukachu! version from SplitReason.

The T-shirt itself is intended to be most offensive-parody  to date by SplitReason. Seriously though, it’s cutely offensive. Grab this tee from SplitReason for $18.95

Google Data Center Information

Posted: 31 May 2008 08:43 AM CDT

CNet has published an interesting information about Google data center and estimates that they have 2,00,000 servers spanned across 36 data centers across the globe. From the article:

On the other hand, Dean seemingly thinks clusters of 1,800 servers are pretty routine, if not exactly ho-hum. And the software company runs on top of that hardware, enabling a sub-half-second response to an ordinary Google search query that involves 700 to 1,000 servers, is another matter altogether.

Google doesn't reveal exactly how many servers it has, but I'd estimate it's easily in the hundreds of thousands. It puts 40 servers in each rack, Dean said, and by one reckoning, Google has 36 data centers across the globe. With 150 racks per data center, that would mean Google has more than 200,000 servers, and I'd guess it's far beyond that and growing every day.

(Fig.01: Google data center [credit:cnet news])

I'm well aware of HA and clustering technologies but this is massive setup with tons and tons of systems. Google uses distributed storage system and other in house developed tools.

Sounds like a great place to work :)

Ahh ha! So that’s how it is done. Remind me to hire some invisible gremlins if I ever want to become a magician. I was doing a little Threadless shopping last night. A lot of their tees lately… are… honestly a bunch of crap. But I really enjoy this one. It’s everything I usually expect to see in a Threadless tee, witty and well designed. Also it is on black, which is always good. It seems like every time I like a design from Threadless they have stuck it on a light blue tee. Yuck.

I never used to have anything against light blue, but the good designs always seem to be put on them. So I have WAY too many light blue tees in my closet.

Come on Threadless, how about some more asphalt, army green, cranberry… or even plumb colored tees?!

Find Out If Windows Server System Hacked / Cracked Or Not

Posted: 29 May 2008 09:25 AM CDT

Some time my work force me to do detective work on MS-Windows boxes. Just like Linux / UNIX / BSD system , Windows machines get *owned* a lot. Recently while searching for information I came across couple of nice built-in windows command line security tools to determine if a system has been hacked cracked.

Fortunately, Microsoft has built numerous tools into Windows so administrators and power users can analyze a machine to determine whether it's been compromised. In this tip, which is the first of a two-part series, Author has covered five useful command-line tools built into Windows for such analysis.

How to Install and Configure ProFTPD in RHEL / CentOS / Fedora Linux

Posted: 28 May 2008 12:38 PM CDT

This is a user contributed tutorial.

ProFTPD is an enhanced, secure and highly configurable FTP server. Its configuration syntax is very similar to apache web server. It offers several functionalities such as:
+ multiple virtual server
+ anonymous
+ authenticated access
+ chroot jail support
+ SSL/TLS encryption
+ RADIUS, LDAP and SQL support etc

Install ProFTPD server

Type the following command as root user:
# yum install proftpd
Start ProFTPD when the system reboot:
# chkconfig --level 3 proftpd on
To start proftpd ftp service, enter:
# service proftpd start
To Stop proftpd ftp server, enter:
# service proftpd stop
To restart proftpd ftp service, enter:
# service proftpd restart
To reload the configuration file, enter:
# service proftpd reload

/etc/proftpd.conf - Proftpd configuration file

The default configuration file is located at /etc/proftpd.conf. To edit the configuration file, enter:
# vim /etc/proftpd.conf
Checking the syntax of the configuration file
# proftpd -t6

Virtual users authentication configuration

When you install ProFTPD, it is almost ready to use by anonymous users, you only have to uncomment anonymous section in /etc/proftpd.conf but if you want authenticated access then you must configure extra directives, keep in mind these to virtual users authentication.

  • AuthUserFile : Specify the users file, has the same format as /etc/passwd
  • AuthGroupFile : Specify the groups file, has the same format as /etc/group

Open /etc/proftpd.conf file:
# vi /etc/proftpd.conf
These files can be created with ftpasswd tool, here is an example:
# ftpasswd --passwd --name {username} --file /etc/ftpd.passwd --uid {5000} --gid {5000} --home /var/ftp/username-home/ --shell /bin/false
# ftpasswd --group --name group1 â€"file /etc/ftpd.group --gid 5000 --member username

For example, add a ftp user called tom for cyberciti.biz domain (ftpcbz group):
# ftpasswd --passwd --name tom --file /etc/ftpd.passwd --uid 5001 --gid 5001 --home /var/ftp/tom/ --shell /bin/false
# ftpasswd --group --name ftpcbz â€"file /etc/ftpd.group --gid 5000 --member tom

Then the above directives must be set in this way :

AuthUserFile	/etc/ftpd.passwd AuthGroupFile	/etc/ftpd.group

Warnings! The created user must have UNIX permission under his home directory.

The value of --shell option must be set to /bin/false if you want to improve the security of the FTP server.

Sometimes ProFTPD throws many errors when you try to authenticated trough virtual users then you must look these directives and theris recommend values.

Don't check against /etc/shells
RequireValidShell off
Don't check against /etc/passwd, use only AuthUserFile
AuthOrder mod_auth_file.c.
Disable PAM authentication
PersistentPasswd off
AuthPAM off

To jail users to theirs respective home directories, add following to config file:
DefaulRoot ~

Playing with files access permission

The general syntax is as follows:
Umask FILEMODE DIRMODE.

Sets the mask of the newly created files and directories. FILEMODE and DIRMODE must be an octal mode, in the format 0xxx. If DIRMODE is omitted then DIRMODE = FILEMODE.

Some examples:

Umask 022

  • The owner has rw permissions over the files and full access over directories.
  • The group has r permission over the files and rx over directories.
  • The world has r permission over the files and rx over directories.

More restrictive:
Umask 026 027

  • The owner has rw permissions over the files and full access over directories.
  • The group has r permission over the files and rx over directories.
  • The world doesn't have any permission over the files neither over directories.

To Deny every one except admin changes files permission via ftp put this in your context:

AllowUser admin
DenyAll

Firewall Configuration - Open FTP port

According to the register hardware web site:

Asus will finally launch the desktop version of its elfin Eee PC early next month. Once dubbed the E-DT, the unit is set to retail as the Ebox, we understand.

The rather Wii-style Eee will incorporate a 2GB of memory and a 160GB hard drive, we hear, but for now Asus is keeping the full spec to itself.

Programming Tutorial: How To Write a FreeBSD Kernel Module ( Driver )

Posted: 24 May 2008 11:11 PM CDT

Nice short guide for writing a kernel module for FreeBSD operating system. From the article:

FreeBSD 7.0 has already been released. If you are a real hacker, the best way to jump in and learn it is hacking together an introductory kernel module. In this article I’ll implement a very basic module that prints a message when it is loaded, and another when it is unloaded. I’ll also cover the mechanics of compiling our module using standard tools and rebuilding the stock FreeBSD kernel.

Download of The Day: CRON-O-Meter Open Source Dieting Software

Posted: 24 May 2008 10:41 PM CDT

CRON-O-Meter is free, open source, and cross-platform (Windows, Linux and Mac OS X) dieting software written in Java. It is a fully featured nutrition and biomarker tracking tool. Designed for practitioners of Caloric Restriction (CRON) Diets.

From the project site:

CR (Calorie Reduced) diets require a lot of information to perform optimally. In order to restrict caloric intake, but remain healthy, users of the diet must track their vitamin, mineral, and protein intakes with great care.

We aim to provide a complete solution to the CR dieter. Current open-source diet-tracking applications fall short in some vital respects. Either they are not detailed enough, or they suffer from critical usability flaws. We believe that a diet tracker must be effortless to operate for the activity for which it will be used most of the time, keeping track of the foods eaten in a particular meal.

To this end, we are developing CRON-O-Meter, an application that will take into account good usability design and dense functionality. It will provide diet advice, track consumption and exercise, and generally assist in all aspects of a CR diet.

Linux Is A Platform For You and Me - Not Just For Specialists

An interesting interview with Canonical chief executive Mark Shuttleworth. He talks about choosing Ubuntu name and in a future undominated by Windows, how Ubuntu hopes to be the provider of a service ecosystem for free software. From the page:

Going to space and seeing the Earth from a distance makes it very clear just how interdependent we are. So I wanted to do something that was really global; free software is a phenomenon that is truly global.

Run Linux From USB Flash / Pen Drive

Posted: 21 May 2008 06:15 PM CDT

If you wanna run Linux any time, any place, any computer, try USB device. Here's what to do with popular distributions like Puppy Linux, Ubuntu, and Fedora, so you can boot up directly from your thumb drive:

Most of the time, Linux is run from either an installation on a hard drive or a live CD/DVD distribution. The first is fast, but not very portable; the second can be run anywhere you have a computer and a CD drive with boot access, but typically isn't very fast. Over the last few years, though, we've seen the emergence of something that combines the speed of a hard drive install with the convenience of a live CD: running Linux from a USB flash drive.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 Released

Posted: 21 May 2008 04:14 PM CDT

Red Hat enterprise Linux version 5.2 has been released and available via a Red Hat Network subscription. This update brings broad refresh of hardware support and improved quality, combined with new features and enhancements in areas such as virtualization, desktop, networking, storage & clustering and security.

Virtualization of very large systems, with up to 64 CPUs and 512 GB of memory, is now possible. Virtualization support for NUMA-based architectures is provided, as well as security, performance, manageability and robustness improvements. CPU frequency scaling support for virtualized environments also allows for reduced power consumption.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 provides enhanced capabilities for several hardware architectures, covering x86/x86-64, Itanium, IBM POWER and IBM System z, which provide improved performance, power usage, scalability and manageability. For example, support for Intel's Dynamic Acceleration Technology permits power saving by quiescing idle CPU cores, and offers performance gains by potentially overclocking busy cores within safe thermal levels. Other hardware enhancements include extensive device driver updates, covering storage, network and graphics devices, and certification of IBM's new Cell Blade systems.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux becomes a certified operating system for IBM's new high-performance blade server based on Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/B.E) Architecture.

Desktop version includes latest cutting edge softwares:

  • Evolution 2.12.3
  • Firefox 3
  • OpenOffice 2.3.0
  • Thunderbird 2.0

Red Hat Cluster Suite, which is included in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Advanced Platform, now has a Resource Event Scripting Language that enables sophisticated application failover capabilities. It also newly supports SCSI-3 reservation fencing support for active/active and active/passive DM/MPIO (multipathing), which widens the range of storage devices that can be used in clusters.

Improved iSCSI support allows users to set-up diskless systems with a root volume on the iSCSI server, a common requirement in high-density Blade environments.

How do I upgrade my system?

First, make sure you backup existing configuration and data. Next, simply type the following two commands:
# yum update
# reboot

Verify that everything is working fine including all services:
# netstat -tulpn
# netstat -nat
# tail -f /var/log/messages
# egrep -i 'error|warn' /var/log/messages
# egrep -i 'error|warn' /path/to/apps/log/file

Alternatively, you can click on the "Red Hat Network Alert Notification GUI Tool" - which is a notifier that appears on the panel and alerts users when software package updates are available for the systems. This is point and click method.

If you are CentOS Linux user wait for some time to get all updates. More information available at Red Hat web site.

Download of the day: Unbound DNS Resolver

Posted: 21 May 2008 11:33 AM CDT

Unbound is a validating, recursive, and caching DNS resolver. The C implementation of Unbound is developed and maintained by NLnet Labs. It is based on ideas and algorithms taken from a java prototype developed by Verisign labs, Nominet, Kirei and ep.net.

Unbound is designed as a set of modular components, so that also DNSSEC (secure DNS) validation and stub-resolvers (that do not run as a server, but are linked into an application) are easily possible.

Developers Deliberately Avoiding Vista for Mac OS and Linux

Posted: 18 May 2008 01:15 PM CDT

Programmers deliberately avoiding association with Vista, and habitually keeping away from Vista for Mac OS and Linux. According to a survey issued last week by Evans Data Corp. The headline was that most developers are still not targeting Windows Vista when they write new apps. Only 8% of the 380 developers surveyed were writing for Vista; 49% were still targeting Windows XP.

It appers that programmers may be developing an interest in something beyond the size of the installed operating system base, which is good news for Linux.

XO Laptop: Hello Windows ~ Goodbye Linux :(

Posted: 16 May 2008 01:28 PM CDT

The One Laptop Per Child Project and Microsoft plan to make both Windows and Linux available on a version of the project's XO Laptop. It means the little green laptop would now run Windows XP as well as Linux. According to Nicholas Negroponte:

OLPC is not in the open-source advocacy business ... we're in the education business.

This will not just kill enthusiasm for the project but the project itself. Windows XP will not run smoothly on low end hardware. It will be now dual-boot system with Sugar and Microsoft's Student Innovation Suite, a US$3 software (Windows XP, Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, Microsoft Math 3.0, Learning Essentials 2.0 for Microsoft Office and Windows Live Mail software).

More information available here.

OLPC did not specify the price of the dual-boot system.

Splashtop to Ship ASUS Motherboards With Linux Preinstalled On BIOS

Posted: 15 May 2008 10:42 AM CDT

Splashtop is a proprietary pre-boot environment, developed by DeviceVM, which allows you to rapidly access certain applications without the need to boot your main operating system. Splashtop boots out of the BIOS on your PC motherboard, and launches a lightweight Linux stack capable of running certain applications like the Splashtop web browser, and the Skype VOIP program. The Splashtop environment allow you to open a web browser, check email, watch videos, instant message, and place VOIP calls within seconds instead of minutes.

Splashtop is currently available only on the ASUS P5E3 Deluxe / WiFi AP motherboard. That motherboard is available most places where ASUS PC components can be purchased.

I've old Intel Celeron 1.7 with 512 MB and 3 x 80GB hard disk FreeSAN SAN device. I'm not thinking to get ASUS P5E3 Deluxe and add 3x 1TB to improve my home storage :)

My friend has this board (P5E3 Premium/WiFi-AP @n) and it has some crazy overclocking abilities. It also supports DDR3 RAM.

OpenSSH ( SSHD ) Speed Optimization For Long Distance Data Transfer

Posted: 14 May 2008 06:02 PM CDT

One of my client has server node located at north America, Asia and Europe data centers. All servers are connected using 1000Mbps links. They transfers lots of data between all nodes over ssh session using scp / sftp. However, performance was horrible. After some research I came across High Performance SSH/SCP - HPN-SSH patch for OpenSSH:

SCP and the underlying SSH2 protocol implementation in OpenSSH is network performance limited by statically defined internal flow control buffers. These buffers often end up acting as a bottleneck for network throughput of SCP, especially on long and high bandwith network links.

Modifying the ssh code to allow the buffers to be defined at run time eliminates this bottleneck. We have created a patch that will remove the bottlenecks in OpenSSH and is fully interoperable with other servers and clients. In addition HPN clients will be able to download faster from non HPN servers, and HPN servers will be able to receive uploads faster from non HPN clients. However, the host receiving the data must have a properly tuned TCP/IP stack.

The amount of improvement any specific user will see is dependent on a number of issues. Transfer rates cannot exceed the capacity of the network nor the throughput of the I/O subsystem including the disk and memory speed. The improvement will also be highly influenced by the capacity of the processor to perform the encryption and decryption. Less computational expensive ciphers will often provide better throughput than more complex ciphers.

You can download HPN-SSH patch here. This patch improved our performance. You also need to tweak Linux TCP/IP networking settings. Here is my sysctl.conf file ( read this TCP tunning Linux guide for detailed explanation) :
net.ipv4.netfilter.ip_conntrack_max=103728
# optimization start
# increase TCP max buffer size setable using setsockopt()
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 4096 87380 8388608
net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 87380 8388608
# increase Linux auto tuning TCP buffer limits
# min, default, and max number of bytes to use
# set max to at least 4MB, or higher if you use very high BDP paths
net.core.rmem_max = 8388608
net.core.wmem_max = 8388608
net.core.netdev_max_backlog = 5000
net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling = 1
# optimization end

Linux Success Story: Go Mumbai Prepaid Smart Card for BEST

Posted: 14 May 2008 05:26 PM CDT

Thanks to low cost and high reliability of Linux - many commuters have opted a smart and cashless way to pay fair every day. Mumbai is commercial and entertainment center of India. Public buses run by BEST cover almost all parts of the metropolis, as well as parts of Navi Mumbai and Thane. Buses are used for commuting short to medium distances, while train fares are more economical for long distance commutes. The BEST runs a total of 3,500 buses, ferrying 4.5 million passengers over 340 routes.

In the swarming Indian metropolis Mumbai, it can be a gymnastic exercise just to fish in your pocket on the packed city buses and stretch out your paying hand to the conductor. Many commuters have opted instead for a 'smart' and cashless way to pay, provided, in part, by Linux. Named Go Mumbai, it is a prepaid smart card for BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) bus journeys.

Threadless is just awesome lately.

Posted: 13 May 2008 08:30 AM CDT

For a while there I had kind of lost interest in Threadless. Due to their designs getting a little less interesting and their shirts staying the same. But lately they are really mixing it up.

image

Designs that are being printed seem to be a little more DBHish than they were before. They are also using their new Threadless tees. Which are not as nice as Fabric, but are still a huge improvement over what they were using.

Still the only problem Threadless really has is that your mother, brother, uncle, roommate and ex-girlfriend will probably all have the same shirts as you. We need some more LIMITED print tees Threadless!

Read the Fine Print on "Open Source" Software

Posted: 12 May 2008 10:58 AM CDT

There is some good discussion going on about open source software licenses and confusion. From the article:

Back in the 1980s, when Richard Stallman was the only one talking about the need for "free software," no one quite knew what he was talking about. That's not just because people looked askance at someone who said it would be possible to write a version of Unix that could be given away for free, along with all of the compilers, editors, and utilities that a typical Unix installation included.

Stallman also managed to confuse people with the term "free" -- he used it as a political statement, saying "free as in freedom," or "free as in 'free speech'," contrasting it with "free as in 'free beer'." But no matter how hard he tried, Stallman was faced with the reality that most people thought of "free software" as programs for which you didn't have to pay money. The fact that Stallman's software was indeed designed to be given away without charge only added to the confusion.

Understanding SELinux ( Security-Enhanced Linux )

Posted: 12 May 2008 10:32 AM CDT

Nice introduction to SELinux and other option to enhance Linux security. Mandatory access control and role-based access control are relatively new to the Linux kernel. With the introduction of the LSM framework, new security modules will certainly become available. In addition to enhancements to the framework, it's possible to stack security modules, allowing multiple security modules to coexist and provide maximum coverage for Linux's security needs. New access-control methods will also be introduced as research into operating system security continues. From the article:

Linux has been described as one of the most secure operating systems available, but the National Security Agency (NSA) has taken Linux to the next level with the introduction of Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux). SELinux takes the existing GNU/Linux operating system and extends it with kernel and user-space modifications to make it bullet-proof. If you're running a 2.6 kernel today, you might be surprised to know that you're using SELinux right now! This article explores the ideas behind SELinux and how it's implemented.

Linux File System Limitations For High Performance Computing

Posted: 11 May 2008 08:14 PM CDT

Linux file systems have a number of limitations that make them a poor choice for large and high-performance computing environments. This article explains some of the pros and cons of Linux and old UNIX file systems:

I am frequently asked by potential customers with high I/O requirements if they can use Linux instead of AIX or Solaris.

No one ever asks me about high-performance I/O -- high IOPS (define) or high streaming I/O -- on Windows or NTFS because it isn't possible. Windows and the NTFS file system, which hasn't changed much since it was released almost 10 years ago, can't scale given its current structure. The NTFS file system layout, allocation methodology and structure do not allow it to efficiently support multi-terabyte file systems, much less file systems in the petabyte range, and that's no surprise since it's not Microsoft's target market.

Debian / Ubuntu Package Troubleshooting: subprocess post-removal script returned error exit status xx

Posted: 11 May 2008 06:47 PM CDT

Here is a quick way to fix half installed packages under Debian / Ubuntu Linux.

If you see an error while removing or installing debian / ubuntu package that read as follows:

(Reading database ... 147148 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace octopussy 0.9.6.2 (using octopussy_0.9.6.2_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement octopussy ...
dpkg: warning - old post-removal script returned error exit status 10
dpkg - trying script from the new package instead ...
dpkg: error processing octopussy_0.9.6.2_all.deb (--install):
subprocess new post-removal script returned error exit status 10
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess post-removal script returned error exit status 10
Errors were encountered while processing:
octopussy_0.9.6.2_all.deb

In above octopussy package is not getting removed because of script error. Mostly these are shell script written using /bin/sh. These scripts called with -e option which means if not interactive, exit immediately if any untested command fails. The exit status of a command is considered to be explicitly tested if the command is used to control an if, elif, while, or until; or if the command is the left hand operand of an && or || operator. In short shell scripts will abort with an error if something fails. To fix this problem visit /var/lib/dpkg/info directory
# cd /var/lib/dpkg/info
Now find out files in following format:
packagename.*
octopussy.*
$ ls octopussy.*
Now open each file and find out line that read as follows:
#/bin/sh -e
Replace with
#/bin/sh
Save and close all the files. Now run apt-get / dpkg command again to remove package:
# apt-get --purge remove octopussy
OR
# dpkg -r octopussy

Klovis tee: surreal-retroness is awesome with sephia color

Posted: 12 May 2008 09:36 AM CDT

Klovis Short Sleeve Screenprint
The are two things about this tee that really impress me. First is the retro-surrealist huge graphic art print, on the chest, that is colorized with sephia blend. Second is the all over, smaller art prints all over the shirts — it seems like this tee doesn’t like to give any single part of it without being inked! Of course the matching color of basic tee color and general print color make this tee worth every dollar you spend.

Klovis tee is available on Nordstorm online store.

Our Blogger friends the Bonanzier who also run Fantastic Bonanza have just pre-released three new T-shirts. The first two tees, Mustard No and the People’s Condiment, promised to be featuring large graphic print. Lately, I found there is a trend towards tees with statement-making graphic art printed in a huge scale. I definitely can’t wait see it on these two.

Another tee is Fancy Mustachio which will be printed using two specialty inks, suede and metallic.

All these three tees can be pre-order until May 24th and all pre-order tees will be shipped June 16th.  While these tees are available on pre-order, they’re sold for only to $20 (down from the usual price of $24 bucks).

How To Find Out If ISP Is Throttling BitTorrent Traffic

Posted: 08 May 2008 05:34 AM CDT

You can now easily determine if your ISP throttling and shaping Bittorrent traffi with simple online tool.

From the project web page:

Certain ISPs have been shown to rate limit or block BitTorrent traffic sent by their customers. While there are multiple reports of this on the web, only a few ISPs have admitted that they manipulate BitTorrent traffic. And, to date, it is hard for users without networking expertise to gain evidence about the behavior of their ISP.

This test suite creates a BitTorrent-like transfer between your machine and our server, and determines whether or not your ISP is limiting such traffic. This is a first step towards making traffic manipulation by ISPs more transparent to their customers.

=> Glasnost: Test if your ISP is manipulating BitTorrent traffic

You can also load this tool on your own server or laptop computer running Apache and PHP 4.3 or above:
$ cd /var/www/
$ sudo apt-get install libpcap0.8 libpcap0.8-dev
$ wget http://broadband.mpi-sws.mpg.de/transparency/glasnost-1.1.tgz
$ tar -zxvf glasnost-1.1.tgz
$ cd glasnost
$ make
$ su -c "chmod a+s bt_client"
$ mkdir 0777 logs

Why many MCSEs won't learn Linux

Posted: 07 May 2008 06:34 PM CDT

Paul has responded to MCSE mike. Checkout my stand on Linux admin vs Microsoft Windows admin.

There are few basic principals under UNIX and Linux. Any MCSE must understand and follow them.

a) Everything is a file - Including your hardware.

b) All server / desktop configuration stored in text files - /etc, /usr/local/etc and ~/.dot-files. So learn to edit and search text files. Learn basis of grep, awk and sed along with vi. Same way all errors are logged in a text file located at /var/log/ directory

c) One small utility performs one single task at a time - Typical Linux box may have 2000-4000 command installed. Each command provides a single functionality.

d) Linux / UNIX is designed for simplicity - Add complexity only where you must.

e) Filters - Ability to chain programs together to perform complex tasks.

g) Interactive commands and dialog boxes are rare in UNIX / Linux - Learn to use commands, command line arguments and man pages.

Let the flame war begun ;)

Emergency Server Management With Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI)

Posted: 07 May 2008 05:49 PM CDT

Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) is a hardware level interface specification that defines a common, abstracted, message-based interface to platform monitoring and control functions. Both IPMI and KVM over IP can be used in emergency situations.

You can use IPMI to:
a] Monitor system health
b] Manage the system
c] Access system when network is down
d] Install new os
e] Power on / off system
f] Retrieve hardware logs etc
g] Read sensors data such as CPU temperature, fan speed, and voltage
h] Serial over LAN etc

How do I access server using IPMI?

You need IPMI client. This is supplied by your server manufacturer such as HP, Dell, IBM etc. You can also use ipmitool command to manage Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) functions of either the local system, via a kernel device driver, or a remote system, using IPMI V1.5 and IPMI v2.0.

How do I login to remote server using ipmitool?

ipmitool command is included in most Linux distributions Use the syntax as follows:
$ ipmitool -U root -I lan -H Server-IP -E shell
OR
$ ipmitool -U root -I lan -H 10.5.1.2 -E shell

If you have a Windows server, you will have access to the Windows Special Administration Console (SAC). If you have a Linux / BSD / UNIX server, you will have access via a console login.

How do I login to remote server using server manufacturers client?

Supermicro provides IPMI command line client called ipmicli.x86. To use this client you must have Supermicro based server or use above generic client.
$ ./ipmicli.x86 ipmi-server-ip
$ ./ipmicli.x86 10.5.1.2

Sample output:

Welcome to Supermicro IPMI Command Line Interface Rev 2.13 (build 06072101) Copyright(C) 2002-2006 Supermicro Computer Inc., All rights reserved User Name: root Password: ********* connect ok ipmi>

Type help command to view supported commands:
ipmi>help
Sample output:

Usage: open [ip address] (if ip is not specified in the command line) close (close the connection) powerdown (power down the system) powerup (power up the system) reset (reset the system) gshutdown (graceful shutdown the system) greboot (graceful reboot the system) gpowercycle (graceful power cycle the system) user username password (set new user) password name password (change password) console (Text Remote Console Redirection) sensor (read the sensors) sel (read the system event log) clearchassis (clear chassis intrusion) log [filename] (log msg, ipmi.log is default if no filename specified) ver (display version) help (display usage) quit (quit the program)

To view sensor data, use sensor command:
ipmi>sensor
Sample output:
