I was just watching Prison Break and then came across this tee. So I had to post it. I guess if you’ve seen Prison Break then you’d understand. :-)

Also, bonus points for the clever product description.

If you make 1,000 paper cranes, all your
wishes will come true.  Or you could just buy
334 of these shirts.  Your choice.

Pitchfork had this to say about the recently released 8.0 rated 'Rook;' "Shearwater have gone out of their way to assert themselves as more than just an Okkervil River side project or one man's solo recordings, but a living, breathing full band. Rook, however, is their first album-length test, one that reaches deeper into their influences and flexes muscles no one knew they had. Singer and principal songwriter Jonathan Meiburg's voice is just one instrument among many that color these ten tracks." Catch them live on the astroturf before they head to Lola's in Fort Worth. We are honored to have them play for us.

Tactics Productions will be filming a live DVD at the Granada Theater the following night and some footage at this instore may wind up as a bonus feature on it. Come pick up a copy the new album so you are familiar with the new songs.

Saturday June 28, 2008-Clint Niosi-3pm
http://www.myspace.com/clintniosi
Clint Niosi was born in Shakopee Minnesota in 1979. For most of the eighties he ran around his nieghborhood in Bloomington, MN. His parents taught him the family trade (glass etching) and introduced him to some excellent oldies music. Clint's older brother made sure he had a healthy dose of heavy metal...while his sister showed him the refinement of 80's top 40 radio. In 1993, much to Clint's dismay, his family moved to the convergance of evil known to some as Mansfield Texas. One month prior to the move however Clint's father provided him with his first guitar. Without many friends in his newfound home Clint spent hours in his room trying to learn classic rock...and all those Seatle band's songs that he taped from the radio. Clint went on to study the musical history and lyrics of the majorty of popular music that was released between A.D. 1950 and 2000. In 2001 he stopped listening to the radio so much. Currently his musical interests include classical and world music, ambient "noise", hip-hop beats, old country, blue grass, and the Fort Worth music scene. As a songwriter Clint describes his personal taste as, "old fashioned". "I like melody and a good harmony...those never go out of style." Clint was the songwriter for several bands that failed to last very long. One band would break up...he would write new songs for the next....then that band would break up (etc). Eventually Clint found himself with a pile of songs and no band...so he continued to play the songs. He didn't just name the band, "Clint Niosi"...that would be silly... and unpractical, because it's apparently hard to spell. Here are some funny misspellings: Clint Nosi - Ridglea Theater 2003. Clint Kiosi - The Moon 2003. Chris Niosi (his brother's name) The Curtain Club 2003. Clint Noisy (It had to happen) Rubber Gloves 2004. Clint recently recieved a B.A. in English from the University of Texas at Arlington. He recently finished a full length ablum titled, "The Sound of Dead Horses Beaten Against Cold Shoulders" to be released this month. Ocassionally he writes in the third person.

Even if people may not realize that in their the first glance; this still could score pretty well due to its graphic detail plus the nicely-presented colors gradient.

So I can’t exactly post pictures of this tee up on here. Because 80’s purple doesn’t seem to want their pictures getting around. I’ll work on getting permission though… for all those future 80’s purple tees. If only I could find their email address. They seem to be hiding it on their website.

Pingdom blog has posted a list of woman open source project contributors around the world. From the blog post:

We here at Pingdom have been talking about why we don't see that many women in Open Source, and were actually about to investigate it further and possibly write a blog post about it. However, when we started to actually look around we were happily surprised. There are lots of women involved in Open Source! For some reason men just seem to stick their nose out more and put themselves in positions where they are seen (and of course there are more of them).

Windows Vista Failure: Pay Extra $50 To Get Aging Windows XP

Posted: 18 Jun 2008 04:39 PM CDT

From the computerworld:

Dell Inc. will charge customers up to $50 for factory-installed Windows XP on some PCs after Wednesday, according to the company's Web site. Vista Business and Vista Ultimate are the only generally-available editions that allow downgrades, and they can be downgraded only to Windows XP Professional. Under Microsoft's licensing terms, the less-expensive XP Home cannot be installed as a downgrade.

This is really funny, Microsoft spent over 6-8 years developing MS-Vista and now users are willing to pay not to use it. This clearly indicate that end users only pay when you have a better product, which is free from DRM crap, faster and less buggy as compare to Vista. As usual, I suggest you get Dell with Ubuntu Linux loaded for 100% peace of mind.

Reddit is a social news website (just like digg) on which users can post links to content on the web. Today (June 18, 2008), became an open source project. All of the code and libraries written for Reddit became freely available. Here's a quick list of the open source products that reddit is built and runs upon:

Debian, lighttpd, HAProxy, PostgreSQL, Slony-I, various python libraries, Psychopg, pylons, Solr, Tomcat, Ganglia, Mercurial, Git, gettext (translation), daemontools, and memcached

Today we're excited to announce that we're open sourcing reddit.

All reddit code is licensed under the Common Public Attribution License, which is basically the Mozilla license with a handful of changes. Specifically, the CPAL stipulates that when running reddit's code publicly, any changes to the code must be made available publicly and the site must make clear that it is running reddit code.

Firefox 3 World Record

Posted: 18 Jun 2008 04:09 PM CDT

FANS of the Mozilla Firefox web browser were attempting to set a world record for the most downloads of a software program in 24 hours. And guess what - we almost did it! It just took five hours to download over 1.6 million copies to get rid of old download record set by Firefox 2.

The offical body of Guinness World Records is yet to approve and announce the record attempt. However, you can go ahead and flaunt it by downloading and printing your very own personalized Firefox 3 Download Day certificate.

From the official blog:

We are currently serving almost 9,000 downloads a minute, which puts us on track to achieve 5-7 million downloads our first day of general availability. To put some more color behind what's been happening on this historic day:

  1. We exceeded the first day download mark for Firefox 2 of 1.6 million after just five hours of availability for Firefox 3.
  2. Net Applications is already reporting a 300% positive change in Firefox 3 market share worldwide just today.

Well done everyone and soon there will be a new World Record :D

Apache Web Server: Log Analysis and Server Status Monitoring Tool

Posted: 17 Jun 2008 04:47 PM CDT

wtop is really cool application for web server log analysis and to see server stats at a glance. It also has powerful log grepping capability. It is just like 'top' for your webserver.

It can find out number of searches or signups per seconds. It can also create histogram of response time. There is also another tool called logrep a powerful command-line program for ad-hoc analysis and filtering for log files. You can dig up lots of information using wtop tools.

You need Python version 2.5 to run wtop.

Download wtop

Type the following command:
$ cd /tmp
$ wget http://wtop.googlecode.com/files/wtop-0.5.6.tar.gz
$ tar -zxvf wtop-0.5.6.tar.gz
$ cd wtop-0.5.6
# python setup.py install

Configuring wtop

Once installed you can start using the tool immediately. You need to edit /etc/wtop.cfg file to setup parameters, Apache log files and other directives
# vi /etc/wtop.cfg
Sample configuration file:

[main] LOG_ROOT=/var/log/lighttpd/cyberciti.biz/ LOG_FILE=access.log DEFAULT_OUTPUT_FIELDS=ts,class,ipcnt,ip,msec,uas,url # This must match your webserver log format. You MUST have at least %h, %r and %D LOG_FORMAT=%h %l %u %t "%r" %>s %B "%{Referer}i" "%{User-Agent}i" %D [wtop] # max time before a request is logged in the "slow" column MAX_REQUEST_TIME=5000 # minimum requests/second before a URL class appears in top mode MIN_RPS=0.2 [classes] # you can extend these to make any classes you wish home=^/(?:\?.*)?$ xml=\.xml(?:\?.*)?$ js=\.js(?:\?.*)?$ css=\.css(?:\?.*)?$ img=\.(?:png|gif|jpe?g|cur|ico|bmp)(?:\?.*)?$ [patterns] # the generic pattern is applied if a line does not match any # of the named classes. By default it uses the top-level directory. generic=^/([^/\?]+) # incomplete list of known web robots robots = r'(?:nutch|MSRBOT|translate.google.com|Feedster|Nutch|Gaisbot|Snapbot|VisBot|libwww|CazoodleBot|polybot|VadixBot|Sogou|SBider|BecomeBot|Yandex|Pagebull|chudo|Pockey|nicebot|entireweb|FeedwhipBOT|ConveraCrawler|NG/2.0|WebImages|Factbot|information-online|gsa-crawler|Jyxobot|SentinelCrawler|BlogPulseLive|YahooFeedSeeker|GurujiBot|wwwster|Y\!J-SRD|Findexa|SurveyBot|yetibot|discoveryengine|fastsearch|noxtrum|Googlebot|Snapbot|OGSearchSpider|heritrix|nutch-agent|Slurp|msnbot|cuill|Mediapartners|YahooSeeker|GrabPERF|keywen|ia_archiver|crawler.archive.org|Baiduspider|larbin|shopwiki)'

Now simply type wtop at a shell prompt:

Download of the day: Wine Final 1.0 Emulator

Posted: 17 Jun 2008 04:16 PM CDT

Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) is an open source implementation of the Windows API which aims to allow Linux / Unix-like systems to execute programs written for Microsoft Windows. It does not require Microsoft Windows, but can use native Windows DLLs if they are available. It provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes. You can easily run MS-Office, Photoshop, IE browser and selected games under Wine software.

Finally, after 12 years of development, version 1.0 was released today i.e. June 17, 2008 under GPL License.

For past 34 month Mozilla engineers have been working and perfecting Firefox v3.0. Now almost 15% of Internet users surf the web with Firefox. Mozilla Foundation aims to try and set a world record for the most downloads in a day. It needs to beat its own record set by Firefox version 2.0. It was downloaded 1.6 million times in Oct-2006. The attempt to break the record will begin at 10:30PM IST (10:00am PDT i.e. 17:00 GMT). Good Luck, Mozilla Team!

A commit happens when a developer makes changes to the code or documents and transfers them into the central project repository. Both developers and files are represented as moving elements. When a developer commits a file, it lights up and flies towards that developer. Files are colored according to their purpose, such as whether they are source code or a document. If files or developers have not been active for a while, they will fade away. A histogram at the bottom keeps a reminder of what has come before.

'Lifelong Link' T-Shirt by Stussy'Lifelong Link' T-Shirt by Stussy girls  After more than 2 decades since Shawn Stussy started the business, the old school (of not classic) skate/surf clothing brand is still trying to reinvented itself. Never too old to learn new trick indeed.

Now check this out. The latest tee, Lifelong Link,  features the crafted wires which formed classic on the backside and the alternative logo of Stussy on the front chest. This tee available in Men and Women size from The Fizix

CommonThreadz not only has nice looking t-shirts, but they also donate one school uniform to a child in a developing nation for each shirt you buy (which makes the $38 per tee price tag much more justified).

It seems like more and more of these “buy a tee and we will donate” companies are popping up all the time. Thankfully the business model seems to be working.

Ubuntu / Debian Linux Find Weak OpenSSL keys

Posted: 16 Jun 2008 09:09 AM CDT

This bug really was a bad one. I've client with over 200 Debian Linux server. Updating all systems wasn't the problem. With the help of Cfengine I was able to push updates but managing all workstation ssh keys (over 1000+ Windows and Linux/BSD workstations) and testing everything took so much time. Debian shouldn't have modified the package in first place. I also had to upgrade over 30 SSL certificates and a whole new CA for OpenVPN. Luckily VeriSign is providing revocation and replacement of SSL certificates (generally it is not provided free of charge) till 30-June-2008.

How do I find out all weak keys?

You can check all your weak keys with following commands:
# wget http://security.debian.org/project/extra/dowkd/dowkd.pl.gz
# wget http://security.debian.org/project/extra/dowkd/dowkd.pl.gz.asc
# gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys 02D524BE
# gpg --verify dowkd.pl.gz.asc
# gunzip dowkd.pl.gz
# perl dowkd.pl host localhost

You should see 0 weak keys. If you run Debian or Ubuntu Linux upgrade your OpenSSL and fix all the affected softwares. There is also wiki page that will address all your concerns. Overall it lasted for few days for large clients. How many hours did you spend updating Debian systems?

A quick snap from Unetee’s Insaneetee $10 deal. Amazing Childhood is balck color T-shirt designed by artist Geraud Margerit with amazing, artsy graphic inspired by playful kids in silhoutte with bright light background.

It gets me curious on how Uneetee made it but from image preview you see above, it seems there’s bright effect on the image print. Is it just color-combination effect, or is te because there’s something “spicy” on the print?

Only left about 16 hours from the time I snap this Insaneetee deal, check it now before you lose it!

Lighttpd mod_rewrite Hotlink Protection To Display Image Message

Posted: 12 Jun 2008 11:19 AM CDT

Many of our regular readers like to know more about lighttpd hotlink protection using mod_rewrite. Lighttpd can use HTTP referer to detect hotlink and can be configured to partially protect hosted media from inline linking, usually by not serving the media or by serving a different file.

Lighttpd anti hotlinking configuration - redirect to another media

Open lighttpd.conf configuration file:
# vi /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf
Append following directive to redirect to a default picture called /hotlink.png:

$HTTP["referer"] =~ ".*BADDOMAIN\.com.*|.*IMAGESUCKERDOMAIN\.com.*|.*blogspot\.com.*" {   url.rewrite = ("(?i)(/.*\.(jpe?g|png))$" => "/hotlink.png" ) }

So if anyone from *.blogspot.com linked www.cyberciti.biz/image.png it will be replaced with www.cyberciti.biz/hotlink.png. I've written small script to detect excessive hotlink from log file and ban all those domains. Most types of electronic media can be redirected this way, including video files, music files, and animations etc.

Related: Apache web server user can stop lechers using mod_rewrite / .htaccess rules.

Security: Perl, XFree86, xorg-x11-server and other Update For Red Hat Linux (RHEL)

Posted: 11 Jun 2008 08:33 PM CDT

Red Hat today issued software updates to fix at least 5-6 security vulnerabilities in various versions of its Linux distribution. These update has been rated as having important security impact. It is recommended that you upgrade (patch) your system using yum command.

A flaw was found in Perl's regular expression engine. A specially crafted regular expression with Unicode characters could trigger a buffer overflow, causing Perl to crash, or possibly execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running Perl.

An input validation flaw was discovered in X.org's Security and Record extensions. A malicious authorized client could exploit this issue to cause a denial of service (crash) or, potentially, execute arbitrary code with root privileges on the X.Org server.

How do I patch my RHEL system?

Simply, type the following command:
# yum update

How do I patch my Debian Linux system?

Debian also updated many of its package to address these vulnerabilities in the X Window system. You can upgrade your system by typing following commands:
# apt-get update
# apt-get upgrade

I'm sure other distros will also release updates.

So Cnchnz, this is a great idea, lets just spruce up the designs a little more, ok?

Linux Data Center Power Consumption Less Than Windows

Posted: 10 Jun 2008 11:13 AM CDT

According to new independent tests Red Hat Linux pulls as much as 12% less power than Windows 2008 on identical hardware. It means Linux is better for reducing data center power consumption or electrical power consumption. From the report:

Our tests point to Linux as the winner of the green flag by margins that topped out at 12%. We ran multiple power consumption tests using Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition, Red Hat's Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.1 and SUSE Enterprise Linux 10 SP1 on four, popular 1U server machines, one each from Dell and IBM and two from HP. The results showed that while Windows Server 2008 drew slightly less power in a few test cases when it had its maximum power saving settings turned on, it was RHEL that did the best job of keeping the power draw in check across the board.

Read full research report about computer power consumption online:

Now the million dollar question, how important is green computing / green computers to you? Would you make switch to save the power?

Linux: Install Django Open Source Framework

Posted: 09 Jun 2008 07:57 PM CDT

Django is a high-level Python Web framework (open source framework) that encourages rapid development and clean, pragmatic design. Django is awesome programming framework. Red hat magazine has published excellent tutorial:

In today's world, web development is all about turnaround. Businesses want to maximize production outcome while minimizing development and production time. Small, lean development teams are increasingly becoming the normal large development departments. Enter Django: a popular Python web framework that invokes the RWAD (rapid web application development) and DRY (don't repeat yourself) principles with clean, pragmatic design.

This article is not about teaching you how to program in Python, nor how to use the Django framework. It's about showing how to promote your Django applications onto an existing Apache or Lighttpd environment.

Yet Another Reason to Have Offsite Data Backup

Posted: 09 Jun 2008 07:42 PM CDT

A new variant of Gpcode virus is out and targeting all Windows systems. It is a dangerous file-encryptor. It encrypts a whole variety of user files, targeting files with extensions such as DOC, TXT, PDF, XLS, JPG, PNG, CPP, H etc using rsa encryption. Once file encrypted it displayed following message on screen demanding ransom:

Your files are encrypted with RSA-1024 algorithm.
To recovery your files you need to buy our decryptor.
To buy decrypting tool contact us at: ********@yahoo.com

RSA-1024 algorithm / encryption is pretty strong and any attempt to break it will result in nothing. According to this blog posting it will take 5 million modern computers to crack a key:

Along with antivirus companies around the world, we're faced with the task of cracking the RSA 1024-bit key. This is a huge cryptographic challenge. We estimate it would take around 15 million modern computers, running for about a year, to crack such a key.

This also makes hard drive data recovery difficult. Your best choice against such attack is backup data regularly and move to offsite. Now virus writer using rsa security to black mail you. Any OS (Windows is big target for this kind of attacks) can be open to such attack and only backups can protect you.
