Linux / UNIX RT Project Management Ticketing System Tutorial Posted: 25 Apr 2008 05:15 PM CDT Internally we use RT (enterprise-grade ticketing system) for customer support and it is one of the best GPL software around. It enables a group of people to intelligently and efficiently manage tasks, issues, and requests submitted by a community of users. RT manages key tasks such as the identification, prioritization, assignment, resolution and notification required by enterprise-critical applications including project management, help desk, NOC ticketing, CRM and software development. Linux magazine has published a nice article about RT installation and configuration: Managing bugs and help requests isn't easy, but it's crucial for effective project management. Using the wrong tool can set your project back to the dark ages, but the right tool can help your team excel. With that in mind, let's look at Request Tracker, an enterprise-grade (and free software) ticketing system written in Perl. A ticketing system is a piece of software in which every bug, request, or problem is entered as a 'ticket,' which can then be tracked. It can be allocated to someone to fix, given a priority, placed in a queue (to separate out different types of bug or request), commented on, replied to, and finally closed when resolved. The system can also send progress updates and reminders to the initial requester and to other people involved with the ticket. Largest Linux KDE Deployment - 52 Million Students Will Be Hooked by 2009 Posted: 25 Apr 2008 04:31 PM CDT Great news! Ministry of Education from Brazil is buying 90,000 Debian GNU Linux computers. The software installed on these systems is "Linux Educational 2.0", a very clean Debian-based distribution, with KDE 3.5, KDE-Edu, KDE-Games, and some tools developed by the project. By the end of this year 29,000 labs serving some 32,000,000 students will be fully deployed and in active use. By the end of next year (2009) those numbers will have swelled to 53,000 labs serving some 52,000,000 students. From the article: I find it very productive working in a terminal environment, as it's efficient and flexible to deal with processes and data, especially text, and especially on remote machines. Now terminals have advanced in capability over time, with some form of "xterm" being the usual terminal of choice. Therefore one should not restrict programs to their usual monochrome defaults, as colour can be used to greatly ease the parsing of text by humans. We have dedicated sensors and portions of the brain specifically for colour, so we should not ignore them.
