FEBRUARY 5th NEW RELEASES
***********************************************
Air Traffic-Fractured Life
Air Traffic's Fractured Life is a debut album of brilliant, occasionally brutal, mood music. The group's name originated from its rehearsals in an abandoned industrial unit near the runway at Bournemouth International Airport, where air traffic control signals could be picked up on the band's equipment. While recording the album, an EP of four of the tracks was released in October 2006 in the U.K. In addition, Air Traffic also had its first television appearance in November 2006 when the band appeared on Later with Jools Holland which paved the way for the release of the album Fractured Life in July 2007. Many of the songs on Fractured Life, like Never Even Told Me Her Name, describe the feelings of breathless anticipation the band registered once the four 21-year olds sensed their career taking off. Another of the songs charting the band's ascent was Shooting Star, a sublime melody poised on the edge of a maelstrom of rock and roll theatrics. From the sexual euphoria of Charlotte to the bleak introspection of Empty Space, to the heart-pumping brand new US track Come On.

Black Lips/Subsonics-split 7"
Four songs from two of Atlanta's best, recorded live at the infamous Clermont Lounge. Black Lips perform "Bad Kids" and "Lean," while Subsonics kick in with "Hello Beauty" and "Pistol."

Brazil Classics 7: What's Happening In Pernambuco, New Sounds Of The Brazillian Northeast
If you only buy one compilation of electronic roots music from Brasil this year, make sure it's this one. In the 1980s, while urban centers of the Brazilian south like Sao Paulo and Rio were inundated with homegrown rock movements, Pernambuco didn't have much of a music scene at all. Vowing to jump-start the local scene Fred Zero Four got together with Chico Science and a collective of local bands and visual artists to found the Mangue Beat movement -- the most significant musical and aesthetic movement in Brazil since Tropicalia. The music is an explosion of punk-rock-funk-rap-electronic sound, infused with the maracatu, coco, ciranda and embolada rhythmic traditions of the rural northeast. Thirteen amazing artists creating a new genre-defying party.

Basia Bulat-To My Darling
Debut album from the Canadian singer/songwriter -- heavily influenced by folk, jazz and acoustic music, her unique vocal style and varied range has led to comparisons ranging from Feist to Natalie Merchant to Elyse Weinberg.

Buria Chamber Trio-Wvrm (Oren Ambarchi/Sunno) 10" picture disc
Watch out for the heavy evil.

Can-Tago Mago
Can-Ege Bamyasi
Reissued at a cheaper price.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis-The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
Soundtrack for director Andrew Dominik's savage tale of the true West (starring Brad Pitt) perfectly captures the charismatic and unpredictable nature of the film's central protagonist. Like the film, Cave and Ellis' music cuts through the mythic figure of Jesse James to reveal the complex, contradictory man beneath. Daring and passionately delivered, this beautiful soundtrack retains its captivating power even without the benefit of Dominik's images.Previously import-only, now available at a domestic price.

Jason Collett-Here's To Being Here CD/LP (Broken Social Scene)
Here's To Being Here captures the essence of Jason's live performances and features the energy and musicianship of his touring band, Paso Mino. Features guest performances by fellow Broken Social Scene member and Apostle Of Hustle frontman Andrew Whiteman, and Liam O'Neil (The Stills) to name a few. File under: Broken Social Scene. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

The Crystal Method-Drive
Latest from the electronica duo was previously available only in limited release as Drive: Nike + Original Run via the Sport Music section of iTunes. Drive is an original soundtrack composed to guide athletes through a 45-minute (insert favorite activity here), from warm-up through cool down.

Betty Davis-Betty Davis LP+7"
Fresh pressing of the 1973 debut from the funk diva. Limited to 1500 copies, packaged in a gatefold sleeve with bonus 7".

Dead Meadow-Old Growth LP/CD
A remarkably clear, powerful and confident recording that should elevate the trio into the pantheon of the great guitar bands of our time. Darlings of both the stoner rock and the modern psychedelia worlds, Dead Meadow transcend both and have created a sound all their own.

Devastations-Yes, U CD/LP
Fifth album of kaleidoscopic proportions from this Australian act (who have been championed by Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) -- recorded in Berlin and mixed in New York.

The District! DVD
This outrageous and visually-stunning animated satire plays like an unhinged ghetto update of Romeo & Juliet smash-filtered through a politically charged -- and politically incorrect -- kaleidoscope of clashing world views and social unrest, complete with musical numbers and a wicked soundtrack of Hungarian hip-hop. "Like an Eastern European South Park." -- Seattle International Film Festival, 2006

Bill Dixon with Exploding Star Orchestra-Bill Dixon with Exploding Star Orchestra
This album finds the free jazz legend performing with Rob Mazurek's (Chicago Underground, Isotope 217) Exploding Star Orchestra and was recorded in Chicago at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio. Other players include John Herndon and Jeff Parker (Tortoise), Nicole Mitchell (Frequency) and Matthew Lux (Isotope 217, Iron And Wine).

Drive By Truckers-Gangstabilly LP
Drive By Truckers-Pizza Deliverance LP
Drive By Truckers-Decoration Day LP
Drive By Truckers-The Dirty South LP
Drive By Truckers-A Blessing And A Curse LP
First time issues on vinyl.

Electric Wizard–We Live
Electric Wizard–Let Us Prey
Rock.

Gilberto Gil-Duetos
Brazilian pop legend pairs up with the likes of Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso and many more.

Gomez-How We Operate 2xLP
Limited 180-gram vinyl pressing previously only available via the band's website.

Grand Ole Party-Humanimals
Lead singer Kristin Gundred rips into each track on Grand Ole Party's debut album as if heavily influenced by Motown girl groups and sexy cabaret dancers. With funky fresh beats and sultry lyrics, the band has created a unique, explosive album. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Hot Chip-Made In The Dark CD/CD+DVD
Third full-length release and the follow up to their critically acclaimed album The Warning. This new installment shows Hot Chip at their best -- wonderfully quirky, clever, soulful and poppy. Their sound is evolving towards wilder, heavier electronics, though still coupled with their signature pop aesthetic. Made In The Dark also shows that the band is equally at home creating songs of intimacy and melancholy as they are with dancefloor fillers. With this release, the hipsters (you know who you are) who found and love Hot Chip will still be lured in by their originality and inventiveness, whereas the undeniable infectiousness and catchiness of their music should bring them a wider audience.

Iron Maiden-Live After Death DVD
All metalheads and rivetheads rejoice.

Isis-Holy Tears
EP from the atmospheric metal masters includes the studio version, a live version, the video and a remix from The Melvins!

Jack Johnson-Sleep Through The Static CD/LP
"My friends and I have just finished recording a new album called Sleep Through The Static. At this point in my life I weigh about 190 lbs and my ear hairs are getting longer. I also have a couple of kids. My wife popped them out, but I helped. Some of the songs on this album are about making babies. Some of the songs are about raising them. Some of the songs are about the world that these children will grow up in -- a world of war and love, and hate, and time and space. Some of the songs are about saying goodbye to people I love and will miss. We recorded the songs onto analog tape machines powered by the sun in Hawaii and Los Angeles. I hope you enjoy this album. Mahalo for listening." -- Jack Johnson
Available for audition in one of our listening stations. Vinyl comes in a gatefold sleeve with a download code for the entire album. Initial quantities include a special picture sleeve 7" featuring the album track "If I Had Eyes" b/w "Let It Be Sung" from the soundtrack A Brokedown Melody.

Kamera-Resurrection
Jason Miller rock from Sweden.

Killing Joke-Fire Dances
Killing Joke-Night Time
Killing Joke-Brighter Than A Thousand Suns
Killing Joke-Outside The Gate
All reissued.

Lenny Kravitz-It's Time For A Love Revolution CD/DLX CD/LP
From the garage stompfest "A Love Revolution" to the James Brown-via-Aerosmith funk workout "Will You Marry Me?" Kravitz's irony-free pastiches often satisfy like the best work of his rock and
soul forebears; and considering his tastes, that's a remarkably high standard

Kronos Quartet-Terry Riley: The Cusp Of Magic
The debut recording of Terry Riley's six-movement piece, The Cusp Of Magic. Commissioned by Kronos on the occasion of their longtime friend and collaborator Riley's 70th birthday, the piece features the Quartet joined by Wu Man on pipa (a Chinese plucked string instrument, similar to a lute) and vocals, with all musicians also playing a variety of percussion instruments, toys, and noisemakers.

Lightspeed Champion-Falling Off The Lavendar Bridge
Lightspeed Champion is the alter ego of Dev Hynes, musical polymath and former member of cult noise pop band Test Icicles (who disbanded in 2006). On this record Hynes is backed by an informal band, including drummer Clark Baechle (The Faint), along with moonlighting members of Cursive and Tilly And The Wall.

Los Campesinos!-The International Tweexcore Underground CDEP/7"
"The International Tweexcore Underground is utterly terrifying. An acrobatic, vanilla-scented waltz bustling with speaker-blotting harmonies and a gliding string-skewered melody that palpitates hearts through mouths, Los Campesinos! third single will have you weeping with fear. But it's not entirely down to the Welsh septet's new release being quite possibly the most thrilling spectrum of xylophone chiming pop-perfection you'll hear this year. No, it's because The International Tweexcore's kaleidoscopic splendour has been concocted by a cherubic bunch of sickly-sweet kids barely old enough to order a pint, nevermind write a track steeped in pure symphonic brilliance. See? Completely terrifying. Rating: 9/10." -- Spins And Needles

Bob Mould-District Line
District Line combines the fire of his earliest work in Hüsker Dü, the accessibility of his alternative rock, genre-defining trio Sugar, and the introspection found in his solo releases. He describes it as "stories of my simple life in a complicated town" (that being his adopted city of Washington, DC). Working with Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty, Mould has returned to the live-band sound that is as youthful, energized and immediate as anything he has ever recorded. Initial copies include a bonus CDEP featuring three songs Bob Mould performed at the 2007 CIMS convention in Los Angeles.

Nada Surf-Lucky
Along with their previous two albums, 2003's Let Go and 2005's The Weight Is A Gift, Lucky is the final piece of a rather astounding trilogy that, taken as a whole, manages to express more about the frustrations and joys of modern life than most artists can expect to assemble over a career. Guest appearances include Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), Sean Nelson (Harvey Danger), Ed Harcourt (English singer-pianist), Phil Wandscher (Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter) and John Roderick (The Long Winters). This deluxe, limited edition version includes a bonus disc featuring two acoustic versions plus two non-album B-sides. Once sold-out, only the single CD version will be available.

Nico-The End LP
The End was Nico's fourth release, as well as her fifth collaboration with JOHN CALE and third with him as producer. The album was her darkest, most caustic work yet. It carried the same organic,
harmonium-based gothic music heard on The Marble Index and Desertshore, but went one step further with the addition of BRIAN ENO's synthesizers and electronics. The mix of Nico's gloomy,
hypnotic melodies and Eno's synthetic droning, as heard on "Innocent and Vain." produced an atmosphere of brooding apocalyptic destruction.

Ocrilim-Annwn
Ocrilim is the nom-de-plume of guitarist Mick Barr, who has performed mightily with Orthrelm and with The Flying Luttenbachers, among others. "This isn't metal proper; it's metallic art-rock - beautiful and more emotionally engaging." -- Alternative Press

Paste Magazine-February 2008 (#40)

Be sure to check out our Paste Recommends listening kiosk for a sampling of this issue's featured artists -- all currently in stock and on sale!

Ptolemaic Terrascope Magazine #36

You also get hundreds of record, book and DVD reviews, as well as a 20-song CD with rare and unreleased recordings from Shirley Collins, Davey Graham, the debut solo recording from the Velvet Underground's oft-overlooked Doug Yule, psych-folkie recluse Kendra Smith, Barbara Manning, Steve Wynn and more! 112 pages.

Radiohead-Jigsaw Falling Into Place CDEP/7" (UK import)_
New single with exclusive live B-sides: "Down Is The New Up" and "Last Flowers" on the CD, "Videotape" on the 7".

Steve Reid Ensemble-Daxaar CD/LP
This legendary jazz drummer (and former Black Panther) has played with the likes of James Brown, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, Sun Ra and many others. Daxaar is a series of improv sessions recorded with longtime collaborator and producer Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) on electronics. The ensemble also consists of keyboards, guitar, bass, trumpet and percussion. File under: Four Tet. "Nuanced afro-jams of hypnotic power." -- Q

Dax Riggs-If This Is Hell Then I'm Lucky
Reissue of demos for Deadboy and the Elephantmen.

Josh Ritter-In The Dark CD+DVD
Josh Ritter-In Good Company DVD
Recorded over two nights in Vicar Street, Dublin, Ireland earlier in 2006, 'In The Dark' is a double CD / DVD set that captured Idaho born singer Josh Ritter at a pivotal moment in his career. With four albums behind him (3 of them gold in Ireland), Josh broke out from cult artist in Ireland to a singer songwriter with a worldwide career. The live album features favorites from across his catalog. 'Kathleen,' 'Girl In The War,' 'Harrisburg,' 'Good Man,' 'Me & Jiggs,' 'Thin Blue Flame,' and many others. The DVD which accompanies the live album is so much more than your standard concert DVD. It's a movie which takes the listener on a journey with Josh. Again it features plenty of performances over two nights at Vicar Street as well as plenty of intimate interview footage with Josh and plenty of color and context around Dublin.

Rock That Uke DVD
Rock That Uke is a quirkily philosophical cinematic love poem that examines the near mystical allure of the ukulele and the recent wave of alternative and experimental musicians who have taken up the four-stringed underdog of the music world to incorporate it not just into their raucous and irreverent original compositions, but into a counter-cultural/post-punk ethos.

Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group-Calibration (Is Pushing Luck And Key Too Far)
Latest solo effort from The Mars Volta guitarist focuses more on electronics and experimentalism and features an all-star cast of contributors including Cedric Bixler-Zavala (The Mars Volta), John Frusciante and Money Mark. Available for audition in one of our listening stations. File under: The Mars Volta.

Roxy Music-The Thrill Of It All: A Visual History (1972-1982) DVD
38-track collection collects live footage, TV performances and promotional music videos. Amazing stuff, much of it with original member Brian Eno.

Say Hi-Wishes And The Glitch CD/LP
The fifth record from the now Seattle-based Say Hi, formerly Say Hi To Your Mom. Available for audition in one of our listening stations. "Recalls the futuristic feeling of Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie -- that intellectual battle with impending modernity and the feeling of alienation from real humanity explored by Grandaddy and Radiohead. Eno-esque with eerie, fantastical motifs." -- Spin

School Of Language-Sea From Shore CD/LP (Field Music)
School Of Language is the new project from David Brewis of Field Music. The album veers between the intricate and unplayable and the solitary and unadorned, their cohesion stemming from an embrace of all that is most obtuse and personal.

Sons & Daughters-This Gift
This Scottish four-piece have fashioned a distinct sound inspired by the melancholy storytelling of Lee Hazlewood, the lyricism of Leonard Cohen, and the raw power of country, blues, and folk filtered through their punk adolescence. This Gift develops this sound into a whirlwind of tarnished sixties glamour, referencing celebrity culture, cult films and literary classics.

State Radio-Year Of The Crow
Long-delayed sophomore release from the Massachusetts reggae-rockers led by guitarist/vocalist Chad Urmston (formerly of Dispatch). The album continues the trio's signature blend of rock, punk and reggae, as well as its socially and politically conscious message. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Kelley Stoltz-Circular Sounds
The fourth LP from San Francisco's Stoltz is a stereophonic advance on the lo-fi psych-fuzz of 2004's Antique Glow and the mid-fi piano-rock of 2006's Below The Branches. Both made #24 in Mojo's "Best Albums" list for their respective years. Circular Sounds is very much a pop record in the classic '60s mold. Radio-ready yet retaining the organic warmth that gave his earlier work its character.

The Ten DVD
Much of the group responsible for MTV's The State -- including director/actor David Wain and performers Ken Marino, Kerri Kinney-Silver and Joe Lo Truglio -- reunite for this outrageous, irreverent and raunchy sketch comedy, which skewers the Ten Commandments. "Hilariously funny!" -- The Onion

Things That Hang From Trees DVD
Deborah Kara Unger is a single mother and lingerie model in a '60s Bible Belt southern town -- a one-woman scandal. She struggles to keep her life afloat amongst judging small town eyes that both resent and love her beauty. Her son, eight-year old Tommy is a frail boy, full of dreams and fantasies caught in an town of misfits and bullies, with only his dysfunctional mother to protect him.

Paul Weller-Wild Wood DELUXE
Deluxe reissue of the album considered by many critics to be Weller's post-Jam masterpiece. The package includes the original album as well as 28 bonus tracks -- including B-sides, demos, outtakes, BBC sessions, covers (including Crosby, Stills And Nash's "Ohio" and Small Faces' "I'm Only Dreaming") as well as a remix of the title track by Portishead. The 32-page booklet features extensive liner notes and current interviews.

Silje is a songwriter who likes to experiment and find new ways to use sounds and instruments in her music. She has studied classical piano, played timpani in an Orchestra, played drums in a marching band and played in a traditional indie pop band, - but when she started recording her songs, she worked with her laptop and a lot of instruments she had no previous experience of playing. She plays around with instruments and sounds without conventions, and combined with her good songwriting, the result is stunningly beautiful.
