MARCH 4th NEW RELEASES
***********************************************
A Weather-Cove CD/LP+MP3
The debut from this indie-folk outfit is moody and warm, rife with odes of looming loss, hopeful notes to self, and hushed revelations that speak directly to the yearning heart. It's intimate music to curl up with. Bonus MP3 download with the vinyl.

The Acorn-Glory Hope Mountain
This ambitious album is a tribute to lead singer Rolf Klausener's mother. Recorded over nine months, the album is intensely personal and heartfelt. Part historical narrative and part surreal fairy tale. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Autechre-Quaristice CD/LP
On Quaristice, Autechre moves forward with a nod to the past -- evolving their highly-processed, vacuous electronica into mind-boggling forms. In a welcome return to their roots, warm tones and melodies appear and dissipate in washes of reverb with dazzling results.Yes, Quaristice good.

Autistic Daughters-Uneasy Flowers
"New Zealand trio's breathtaking second full-length is overcast with piercing electric guitars, scratchy acoustics, and singer Dean Roberts' cold delivery atop subtle touches of drums, electronics, noise and piano-strides. Uneasy Flowers is a finely executed collection of chilling, beautiful sounds." -- XLR8R

Band Marino-The Sea & The Beast
If a covey of wide-eyed indie kids reinterpreted your grandpa's record collection, it'd probably sound something like the incandescent Band Marino. A swirling carousel of guitars, banjos and mandolins, their whims come in an old-style vernacular. But boring neo-traditionalists they're not. The folk trimmings, melodic verve and rock energy culminate in an effusive sort of carnival pop. The music is atmospherically rich and emotionally generous, a tapestry crafted in adoring detail. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Band Of Horses-No One's Gonna Love You 7"
This is a Band of Horses seven inch single featuring No One's Gonna Love You on the a-side and a cover of Am I a Good Man, by Them Two on the b-side, recorded live for KEXP.

Todd Barry-From Heaven
Barry's third comedy album touches on hard-hitting issues -- from The Container Store to famous bass players -- in his inimitable high-energy style.

Bauhaus-Go Away White CD/LP
They have inspired countless bands and have mesmerized the masses with their ability to be simultaneously sparse, dark, anthemic, and glam. Go Away White is their first -- and last -- new studio recording since 1983.

The Black Crowes-Warpaint
First album of all-new studio material in seven years finds the Crowes doing what they do best -- rocking the old school boogie with some country and Southern gospel flavor. (Maxim magazine? Never heard of 'em.) Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Born Ruffians-Red, Yellow, And Blue CD/LP
Produced by Rusty Santos, the New York mixer behind Animal Collective and Panda Bear albums, Red Yellow & Blue exemplifies the Ruffians' brand of self-described "hootin' and hollarin'." With songs like the jangly ''Hedonistic Me'' and the sugary sweet ''Foxes Mate For Life'' to the foot stomping ''Badonkadonkey,'' the band constantly pushes the boundaries of musical arrangement. Available for audition in one of our listening stations. "Born Ruffians are the Vampire Weekend you don't have to fret over -- all the witty wordplay and jingle-jangle joy, none of the nagging questions about Afro-pop appropriation and Ivy League privilege. 8.0." -- Pitchfork

Cadence Weapon-Afterparty Babies
Cadence Weapon's Anti debut pushes the envelopes of rap and electronic music -- recommended for fans of Aesop Rock, LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk and Busdriver. CD now, vinyl due early April. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Carlene Carter-Stronger
As part of country music royalty -- the daughter of June Carter Cash and Carl Smith and stepdaughter to Johnny Cash -- Carlene Carter has seen the ups and downs of both the music business and life. Thirteen years in the making, this is her most honest and moving work to date.

Johnny Cash-The Definitive Collection 1985-1993
Covers the decade before Johnny hooked up with Rick Rubin for the American Recordings. Appearances from Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Roseanne Cash, Everly Brothers, Hank Williams, Jr., U2 and more.

Rhys Chatham & His Guitar Trio All-Stars-"Guitar Trio Is My Life!"
Utilizing multiple electric guitars and a single chord, 1977's Guitar Trio is composer Rhys Chatham's signature work -- a euphoric, minimal-punk classic. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Guitar Trio, Chatham musters an all-star guitar army for this epic three-disc tribute, performed and recorded live at various locations. Guitar Trio Is My Life! features members of Sonic Youth, Swans, Tortoise, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion, Town And Country, Die Kreuzen, 90-Day Men, Collections Of Colonies Of Bees, Tony Conrad and many others.

Chatham County Line-IV
The North Carolina quartet's fourth album is a boozy blend of Americana and loose acoustic rockers that exhibits the band's ever-evolving style. The progression seen on the album is helped along by indie pop musician and producer Chris Stamey (Yo La Tengo, Alex Chilton, Alejandro Escovedo).

Gene Clark (The Byrds)-White Light LP
Clark's 1971 singer/songwriter masterpiece -- pressed on 180-gram vinyl. File under: The Byrds.

Elvis Costello-This Year's Model: Deluxe Edition
The classic 1978 album plus ten B-sides, alternate takes and demos as well as a seventeen-song live recording from The Warner Theater in Washington, DC on February 28, 1978.

Chris Corsano-The Young Cricketer LP
Corsano's free jazz drumming has leapt from post-hardcore explorations into outrageous, primeval and outright futuristic ensembles throughout his career. This LP is a field recording of wire, skin, metal and soul -- not tunes for your neighbor's bongo party. Originally released only on CD-R, this LP is remastered and issued in a limited edition of 600 copies.

Kathleen Edwards-Asking For Flowers
Supported by a group of master backing musicians, Flowers tells indelible, clear-eyed stories of hope and resignation, humor and death, unconditional love and brazen inequality. Co-produced by Edwards and Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Whiskeytown), the album features keyboardist Benmont Tench (Tom Petty's Heartbreakers), drummer Don Heffington (Bob Dylan, The Wallflowers), bassist Bob Glaub (Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, Leonard Cohen), guitarist Colin Cripps (Sarah McLachlan, Bryan Adams), and pedal steel ace Greg Leisz (Sheryl Crow, Wilco, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss). Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Encyclopedia Asthmatica Volume 1 DVD
Nearly all of the Asthmatic Kitty Records' roster, and many of their friends, make an appearance somewhere on this DVD: from the playful choreography of the Think Dance Collective frolicking in shoes made of bread to the music of Half-Handed Cloud, to the lovely abstraction of Sufjan Stevens' projectionist, Deborah Johnson; from the haunting and raw post-apocalypse video fuzz of live Castanets, to the crisp color footage of My Brightest Diamond at Northsix, there are visual pieces that hopscotch the chasm between the professionalism of a music-visual DVD to the rabid eccentricity of a five-copy, underground video-zine.

Envy-A Dead Sinking Story CD/LP
Envy's third album, originally released in 2003, repackaged and remastered.

Eprhyme-Punklezerap 7"
Enter Eprhyme -- a rapper with more on his mind than his money -- a Jew with issues other than his mother. A cultural nomad with roots in seemingly contradictory cultural contexts, Eprhyme approaches both Judaism and hip-hop with a profound respect for tradition, balanced by creative freedom and poetic license. Not afraid to experiment or cross boundaries of content and style, Eprhyme blends and juxtaposes seemingly divergent sounds and ideas into a swirling and seamless whole.

The Felice Brothers-The Felice Brothers
Their distinct brand of songwriting and the lawless sound they've forged has earned them comparisons to Woodie Guthrie, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark or a young Springsteen. CD now, vinyl due early April. "Backwoods Americana is all the rage, but this band of brothers is a cut above the rest." -- The Sun UK

Fleet Foxes-Sun Giant
The Sun Giant EP is Sub Pop's first release with the really very wonderful, baroque harmonic pop combo Fleet Foxes. Their names are Skye, Robin, Nicholas, Casey, and Christian and they live here in Seattle, Wash. Sub Pop will be releasing a longer-length (some might even say "full-length") recording of theirs on June the 3rd, 2008. This forthcoming recording will, in all likelihood, bear the same name as the band, and by that we mean Fleet Foxes. Pitchfork gave this EP a 8.7.

Flogging Molly-Float CD/LP
More mature yet retaining the immediacy that marks their prior work, hard charging tunes give way to more sober (sober? what!?!) ruminations. The overall effect is a symphonic layering of sound that possesses a unique rhythmic flow from boisterous to bereaved and back again. And presumably it's good drinking music.

The Gutter Twins-Saturnalia CD/2xLP (Afghan Whigs/Mark Lanegan)
The first album from the collaboration forged in late 2003 by Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens Of The Stone Age) and fellow maverick singer-songwriter Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs, Twilight Singers). Saturnalia is rootsy but baroque, handmade yet modernist, teeming with intense, mystic melodies. Bonus MP3 download with the vinyl.

Hanne Hukkelberg-Little Things
Reissue of her 2005 album. Essential

Hanne Hukkelberg-Rykestrasse 68
Hukkelberg's sophomore album is a tribute to the six months she spent living in Berlin. It is far less whimsical -- with a moodier, more widescreen production -- than her debut. The album features contributions from the cream of the Norwegian music scene, including members of Jaga Jazzist, Mari Boine Band, Dinosau and Shining. Enhanced with the video for "A Cheater's Armoury." Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Howlin' Rain-Magnificent Fiend CD/LP
By turns pummeling and pastoral, Magnificent Fiend oscillates between roaring, Hammond driven tracks and delicate electric piano passages, topped with harmonized yet dissonant guitar lines, quirky breaks and extended instrumental sequences. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Kid Kishore-The Social Club No. 9 7"
Kid Kishore strikes a balance between old and new, blending the sounds of India with the electronic music that permeates Denmark. Self-described as anything from "Danish ghetto-tech" to "golden age Bollywood," his beat-heavy sound is a scattershot mix of musical styles from all over the sonic landscape. Hand-numbered, limited edition of 750 copies.

Dawn Landes-Fireproof
Hailing from Brooklyn, originally from Kentucky, and having spent her years honing skills as a recording engineer, Dawn Landes is now taking her songs out of the New York anti-folk scene.

Ladyhawk-Shots CD/LP
Evoking the devilish sounds of Goats Head Soup's guitars, the honey-slides and howling of Neil Young in his darkest hours and the phantoms that haunted Roky Erickson, Shots is filled with the cold creaking and ghostly echoes of an old house in the dead of winter. Bonus MP3 download with the vinyl.

Stephen Malkmus-Real Emotional Trash Dbl LP/CD
Stephen Malkmus has never made a record that covered nearly as much stylistic ground as this nor, it could be argued, has he made an album that has packed as much of an emotional wallop. "Cold Son," "Out Of Reaches" and "We Can't Help You" are amongst the more gorgeous, contemplative songs Malkmus has recorded, though we should stress a) there's no shortage of dark humor scattered through Real Emotional Trash, and b) Malkmus remains a sh!t-hot guitarist. The three-sided vinyl LP includes a full MP3 download. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Van Morrison-Still On Top: The Greatest Hits 3xCD
Expanded three-CD, 51 track, career-spanning compilation.

Murder By Death-Red Of Tooth And Claw
Latest from the Indiana-based band pushes the boundaries of their blend of rocking Americana noir and dramatic post-punk.

Numbers-Tomlab Alphabet Singles Series W 7"
Includes a cover of Tommy James And The Shondells' classic "Crimson And Clover."

Our Last Night-The Ghosts Among Us
Hailing from a small town in New Hampshire, Our Last Night's explosive debut has kids around the world taking notice of their ability to craft brilliantly catchy songs while maintaining credibility with their astounding technicality and balance between the heavy and the melodic.

The Ruby Suns-Sea Lion
Sea Lion was intended to be a world music album, but reverb and psychedelic pop crept in to create a unique mixture of exotic sounds, accomplished with an impressive array of instruments -- from steel-string ukulele to African drums to pots and pans -- all set upon a cozy cushion of synths and cassette samples.

David Saw-Broken Down Figure
Saw's second full-length -- released on Ben Taylor's (legendary crooner James Taylor's son) label Iris Records -- carries a blend of sounds that combine Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Paul Simon with just enough pop music infusions to keep it fresh. Broken Down Figure is both sad and hopeful, showing off Saw's songwriting chops and lyrical ability. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

The Swimmers-Fighting Trees
Reminiscent of '60s British pop, The Swimmers hint at influences such as The Kinks and The Velvet Underground and draw comparisons to contemporaries The Arcade Fire, Spoon and The New Pornographers. Available for audition in one of our listening stations.

Tammar-S/T LP
Minimal keyboards and drums bring to mind early Suicide while tripping guitars and theatrical accented vocals recall the more paisley moments of Felt and U2, respectively.

Valet-Naked Acid
A fever dream of ghostly incantations and smudged psychedelia, Naked Acid is the powerfully beautiful sophomore album from Portland Oregon's talented and prolific Honey Owens.

Waco Brothers-Waco Express: Live & Kickin' At Schubas Tavern, Chicago
Full of shout-along manifestos and strident tomfoolery from each of their seven studio albums, Waco Express lives up to the mandate given to the mastering engineer to "err on the side of massive and fierce and overwhelming."

Scott Walker-1 LP
Scott Walker-2 LP
Scott Walker-3 LP
Scott Walker-4 LP
All reissued by our friends 4 Men With Beards.

What Made Milwaukee Famous-What Doesn't Kill Us
Sophomore release from the Austin-based indie rockers. "Positively exuberant, teeming with squiggly keys, extroverted hooks and brightly anthemic guitar -- all grounded by Michael Kingcaid's mellifluous croon." -- Spin

Jim White-Transnormal Skiperoo
Jim White is a highly original voice in the immense Southern gothic tradition. When broken humanity aches for grace, music like his may give you a shot at redemption. Produced by Joe Pernice and Michael Deming, recorded with the band Ollabelle, and featuring tracks with Tucker Martine and Laura Veirs, local Georgia legends Don Chambers & GOAT, bluegrass duo Jeff & Vida and percussionist Mauro Refosco.

Whiskeytown-Stranger's Almanac: Deluxe Edition
Deluxe treatment for 1997 effort from Ryan Adams' old gig includes 24 previously unreleased tracks -- radio performances, demos, acoustic versions, soundtrack cuts, covers (from Fleetwood Mac to Gram Parsons) as well as tunes from the legendary Barn's On Fire sessions.

White Hinterland-Phylactery Factory CD/LP
Singer/songwriter Casey Dienel's (aka White Hinterland) new album is filled with dreams, memories, warnings and reminders. Her voice is more hidden, crouching amid swish, drone and the wildflower jazz of her friends. Bonus MP3 download with the vinyl.

Thom Yorke-Harrowdown Hill/The Clock/Cymbal Rush Remixes 12"

Tuesday March 11, 2008-Cryptacize-7pm
http://www.myspace.com/cryptacize
http://www.asthmatickitty.com/musicians.php?artistID=17
Cryptacize began across the street from the C&H Sugar Factory in Crockett, CA, where Nedelle and Chris (Deerhoof) lived in a tilted apartment. Constant dizziness and the smell of burning sugar became a permanent part of their psyches, and is consequently their biggest influence. One morning while brushing their teeth, toothpaste running sideways out of their mouths, Nedelle pronounced the word 'Cryptacize' and the house appeared to incline in the opposite direction! Soon after this strange incident, they discovered something even stranger on youtube - a drummer named Michael Carreira. Having only seen his video, which was a closeup of his hands, they sought him out and convinced him to join their uncanny crusade. Catch them here before they play with Why? later that night in Denton.

Wednesday March 12, 2008-Human Bell-7pm
http://www.myspace.com/humanbell
http://www.thrilljockey.com
Nathan Bell (Arbouretum) and Dave Heumann (Lungfish) first started playing music togther sometime after the start of '99 and definitely before the end of '01. It was soon apparent that they'd hit upon a winning combination - they found an unusual synergy of writing styles that has enabled them, at times, to compose a whole album's worth of songs together in the course of a leisurely afternoon. The style of music that they found themselves playing defies categorization, but has been described by listeners as containing aspects of minimalism, pre-war american blues/folk, and middle eastern and african musics. They are stopping off their way to hook up with the Boredoms. This will be their only show in the area.

http://www.myspace.com/thelkhideout
http://www.thelkhideout.com
The LK, from Malmo, Sweden, will embark on their first full American tour to promote their upcoming US release - VS the Snow. The LK compose music using color and shapes as artistic guidelines (Lindefelt is a color-timbre synesthete), incorporating motion graphics into the live show, frequently experimenting with the dynamics of both abstract visual work and short films in the context of their music. This will be there only show in Dallas.

Tuesday March 18, 2008-Silje Nes-5pm
http://www.myspace.com/siljenes
http://fat-cat.co.uk/fatcat/artistInfo.php?artist=Silje+Nes
Silje is a songwriter who likes to experiment and find new ways to use sounds and instruments in her music. She has studied classical piano, played timpani in an Orchestra, played drums in a marching band and played in a traditional indie pop band, - but when she started recording her songs, she worked with her laptop and a lot of instruments she had no previous experience of playing. She plays around with instruments and sounds without conventions, and combined with her good songwriting, the result is stunningly beautiful. She will be opening for The Dodos the next night at Lola's in Ft. Worth.

Tuesday March 18, 2008-The Dodos-6pm
http://www.myspace.com/mericlong
http://www.dodosmusic.net

NEW MUSIC NOW
***********************************************
THIS WEEK'S FEATURE: GOLDFRAPP
GOLDFRAPP make a 180 from their previous two disco beat-heavy releases and settle in the warm, sensual, and shimmering sunlight that glows up their latest, SEVENTH TREE. It is the sound of a very British delirium, echoing the poetry of Edward Lear and the eccentricities of early Pink Floyd. Recorded in a 1960s bungalow in Bath, England, it was a conscious move to step away from the Weimar-esque strutting of earlier work and explore a more psychedelic terrain.
